sharing normal.dot (Word 97 SR2 on Win2000)

I KNOW it's a seriously evil to share normal.dot but to date I've got away with it...

Holding a read only copy of normal.dot on an NT4 server and setting the user templates option in Word 97 SR2 on NT4 clients to point to a network folder has been stable and everybody has been happy (for years in fact, a similar arrangement using Word 6 on Win3.11 clients to NT4 server was stable too).

Enter two new PCs, only difference is that these new boxes are Win2000 clients, and the long lasting honeymoon is over. Word won't start. It gets worse...

Leaving Word out of the loop and just trying to select normal.dot in Win2000 Explorer locks up the machine. Task Manager can rescue the situation sometimes by allowing me to 'end task' but on occasion Task Manager does not list the locked instance of Explorer in the application tab i.e. my occult approach to normal.dot is even able to destroy Win2000 Explorer and thus force a cold reboot.

Whilst this fire and brimstone falls around my ears (and on the other Win2000 box) all the other PCs continue to work away in their time honoured stable manner (you can see them all floating on clouds and playing their harps).

Let this be a warning to you all, don't mess with the black arts.

Well. Are you unstuck yet? Should be a simple matter to point the existing boxes to their own Normal.dots.

But, of course, you've got the company jewels in that shared normal, right? Got to move all that to a global.

Just to reiterate (preaching to the choir?): leave normal.dot as a repository for users' customizations only: autotext, macros, toolbars, etc. Put nothing of company value in there. And let it reside on a LAN folder -- that way the roaming users always have access to their settings and little macros. And if by some chance the server crashes or normal gets corrupted, just let Word give you a new one.

You might want to take a look at Sharing Customizations for instructions and information on sharing / copying / moving customizations including macros, AutoText, Toolbars and menus, and key assignments (i.e., moving the family jewels to a safer and more convenient location).

Thanks Kevin and Charles. It's hard and painful work typing with burnt fingers but I think I am now..

You might get some benefit from this procedure which automatically substitutes a different default template for new documents. That template could be safely shared (although making changes would be a real pain - you would have to get everyone to close down Word).

I think I might! Thank you Chas,

I will experiment and comment further (if I find I am able to do so politely!) via the other thread. As for making changes, Real Pain and I are old buddies.
