Reading properties of unopened file (VBA macro in Word 2000)

Windows Explorer (File > Properties) allows me to examine an unopened Word document's summary properties (such as Title, Subject, etc.)

I need to extract that same information using a macro, without opening the file, and can't find the right tool to use. Microsoft offers a DLL that provides the functionality, but I think all users of the macro would have to install and register that DLL. This is not feasible.

Does someone know another way to get at this data, simulating Explorer's behavior?

    Thanks.

There is a product on the market a demo version of which is available from the manufacturer: Desaware.

There was a post in the VBA forum about this being a better property extractor, but I can't find the post.

I think the product was called StorageInfo.

It's called StorageTools, and you can find information on it at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.desaware.com/StorageToolsL2.htm>http://www.desaware.com/StorageToolsL2.htm</A>

You, or a utility program of your choosing, will always need to open the file; I think you mean "without doing a File, Open in Word".

There is, floating around, a description of the layout of a Word document. I'd expect the summary properties to be eady to obtain.

One could write a small VB or VBA program to open the document file in Binary mode, grab and analyse a string of, say, the leading 32K bytes, and extract the data you require.

Take a look at this KB article.

Dsofile.exe Lets You Edit Office Document Properties from Visual Basic and ASP (Q224351)

The download is a fully functional VB p[rogram that shows you how to extract document properties from any Word or Excel document without opening the file using the supplied DLL.

    Cheers,
