File; Save problem with files containing Macros (Office 2000 - Excel (9.0.

    Hi --

We have Windows NT4.0 on the server, Windows 98SE, Office 2000 SR1

o A bit of background on the File; Save problem -
I've created some files with Macros and saved them on the server.
They are protected with a Write Reservation password.

A user opens one of these files, with Read-Write access.
Another user has tried to open the same file, but not 'progressed'
beyond the Macro warning dialog box -- this happens often :-|

    o The problem is-
When the first user (with Write-access) tries to save the file, the
    save doesn't complete.
It gives an error message 'Save not completed' with Retry and Cancel
    buttons.

Somehow, the file gets 'locked' on the second user's system _until_
he/she goes beyond the Macro warning dialog box.

I could reproduce the 'error' with other such files, from different
    PCs.

Incidentally, the same problem occurs with Word 2000 files as well !
The message is a bit more informative -- 'Word couldn't complete the
save due to a file permission error' :-/

o Apart from asking users to 'complete' the file open process after
the Macro warning dialog box, there seems to be no other solution !
And they do tend to leave files in this state if something else
interrupts the process, like a phone call, etc...

o We discovered this quite by chance.
Otherwise, earlier, there was no choice but to cancel the save and
rename the temp file saved in the same folder as the original file
after deleting the original (already a known workaround for 'file not
    saved' errors)

I'd like to hear from others who may have faced such a problem with
files containing macros -- and hopefully might have resolved it
    somehow... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

One workaround would be to use an other "control" workbook that -with a macro- opens the "shared" workbook.

You then get the macro warning on the opening of the Control workbook, but none on the macro driven opening of the shared workbook.

If the process gets interrrupted, you'll have the control book hanging about, but not your shared book.

    Any good?

    Thanks Jan --

    That should do the trick...

I'll try it out and get back to you...

However, just as an afterthought, shouldn't such a potentially 'dangerous' problem have been taken care of in Office's programming logic ?
    Sighhhh...

    No, this should work.
