    Rec: ZoneAlarm (Free Firewall 2)

    Title: ZoneAlarm
    Version: 2.1.44
    Platform: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000
    Download Size:1.66MB
    Rating: ZdNet 5*
    Description:
ZoneAlarm is an easy-to-use Internet security utility that sets up a personal firewall that's particularly well suited to DSL and cable modem users. Computers with such an always-on connection have a permanent IP address, making them especially vulnerable to information theft and other attacks. ZoneAlarm lets you select one of three security levels to separately apply to local and Internet traffic. In addition, you can designate which programs on your computer are allowed to access the Internet. Anytime an event occurs that ZoneAlarm blocks, you're notified with a pop-up window that details the offense and asks how to respond to future occurrences. The program also provides integrated protection against VB script email attachments. Its system-tray icon even provides a handy menu that enables you to disable all Internet activity with a mouse click. You can also set this "lock up" to activate automatically after a selected period of inactivity or whenever your screen saver activates. Detailed logging of all activity is maintained. The program is free for personal use; other customers must pay $19.95 per seat.

Very interesting and worthwhile reads at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://grc.com/dos/intro.htm>Steve Gibsons GRC.COM</A>.

    Some hilights from the article(s).

Zone Alarm continues to be effective in preventing the use of the latest IrcBot and Sub7Server trojans. Black Ice Defender fails dismally.

The Home Edition of Windows XP will be severely compromised and open to malicious use by network hackers.

A simple test is available for infection by these trojans.
At a DOS window type the commands:

    <big><font color=blue>netstat -an | find ":6667 "</font color=blue></big> and
    <big><font color=blue>netstat -an | find ":113 "</font color=blue></big>

If any connections are shown for either of those sockets, you are infected.

Zone Alarm also produces a log file of all the hits made on your system. To make use of this there is Zone Log Analyzer (free trial)<A target="_blank" HREF=http://zonelog.co.uk> here </A>
This tells you what the attacks were (look out for the red ones!) and who made them. You can automatically produce a report and inform the relevant ISPs.

    Very handy.

Although particularly useful with a permanent connection it is also interesting to use with an ordinary dial in modem.

A couple of times I have been working away while ZoneAlarm was updating me on another computer steadily trying to gain access, working systematically from one port to the next for about 45 mins until I finally logged off. Spooky.

    Great program.

It is interesting to see all the good comments about ZoneAlarm... I was using it and was very impressed until I got an MS Optical Wheel Mouse and now ZoneAlarm Hangs all the time (See my post in the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=hard&Number=70174&page=&vie w=&sb=&o=&vc=1>Hardware section</A> of Woody's Lounge)
The ZoneAlarm folk do reply to your questions, they told my my files were corrupted and how to rectify the problem. It is a drag however having to delete the files and reinstal at least every other day...
Anyone had similar problems and know a patch or work araound?

    Dave:

Have your problems with ZoneAlarm gone away with the Logitech V9 driver?

Most people swear by ZoneAlarm but some swear at it. Other than forgetting to open up the local LAN for file sharing (my error) I have not had any serious problems with it. Only other big problem is deciding when/if I should let a new program dial out to the Internet.

Someone else suggested that i try adjusting the hardware acceleration which i did with no joy....
Can't find a driver by that name and have left a message on the hardware board asking for clarification and am still awaiting an answer!

    Re: ZoneAlarm (Free-Ver 2.6.357)

Thanks for all the help... am unsure if the problem was solved by the new Zonealarm or by the latest optical wheelmouse driver or even if it was a joint effort... but anyway been using the two together since DaveA's message and no crashes... YIPPEEE I can now recomend Zonealarm with no reservations!

Re: Rec: ZoneAlarm (Free Firewall 2)

I am using Windows ME and Zone Alarm Pro and an optical mouse along with the Microsoft Keyboard. I have my USB optical mouse plugged into the keyboard and have never had a problem with it hanging.
