CD DRIVE Not recognized

I am working with an older Tiger GT200 system. It has a UCDJ 24X cd drive and is running WIN 95. The system boots up fine but does not recognize the cd drive. i know that the cd drive works because when I boot using a WIN 98 start up disk which loads atapi drivers, I can access the cd drive and get a DIR listing.

My hard drive controller listing in DEVICE MANAGER has two items with yellow exclamation points. They are as follows: Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo) and Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo). There is a third listing as follows: Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller.

I want to reformat my hard drive and load WIN 98 SE. Since I can access the CD drive with my start up disk, is it OK to proceed. Or should I try to fix the recognition problem for the cd drive first???

Hi
It is absolutely essential that you get rid of those yellow exclamation marks. No ifs or buts.
It's a long time since I used Win 95, but you could try first installing the drivers for the IDE controller manually i.e. via Device Manager and from a list of compatibilbe hardware.
Failing that, try an 'over-the-top' install of 95 i.e. into the current directory. If no joy, a fresh install of your OS may work.

Actually I went much further - I formatted the drive and installed WIN 98 SE. All is well. Thanks for the help.

Just my worth. When I run into this, and I do all too frequently (we use Win 95 on about 35 machines at work) I use a Win 98 install disk and when asked for the CD, I put in a Win 95. So far this has worked all but one time (stupid Sony drivers! )
