Customizing View Causes Crash (XP/2002 SP-1)

For some reason, whenever I try to customize the columns shown in a view, Outlook crashes with the restart or send data to Microsoft dialog. If I try to add/remove a column or move that column up/down (in order), nothing occurs and I get the crash. The only thing I've tried to correct this (and I've subsequently found that it's obviously not related), is to right-click on the personal folders folder and compacted the folder. All data in this personal folder is intact. Anyone know what's broken and how to repair it? I'm using Outlook XP under WinXP Pro. Thanks.

make a copy of the pst and start outlook with the /cleanviews switch. you'll lose all the views you created.

Thanks, Mary. I made a copy of my PST file, executed Outlook with the /cleanviews switch, and while Outlook did come up without my modified views, the chosen columns are still there and cannot be modified without Outlook crashing. FWIW, I've been concentrating my efforts on the Contacts folder if that makes any difference (I even created a new Contacts2 folder to no avail). There's something in the columns routine that seems to be broken.

rename the outcmd.dat file. (and you can go back to the pst with the custom views)

Renaming the file had no effect (it still crashes). I suppose the answer is to stop futzing with the columns, eh?

at least for now. There is obviously something wrong and two of the standard fixes don't work...
