Search and replace: curly quotes (Word97)

In WordPerfect you could search a document with straight quotes and replace them with curly quotes. All you had to do was turn curly quotes on; open the S&R dialog and type <font color=red>"</font color=red> in both the search and replace windows; then hit "replace all".

Can this be done in Word? The best I can come up with is manually inserting <space><left straight quote> in the search window and <space><left curly quote> in the replace window. Then you can run the replace and, when finished, then do the same thing again with the right quotes ( ie <right quote><space>).

    Keith,

You should be able to do this.
Just go to Tools > Autocorrect > Autoformat as you Type tab.
Make sure there's a checkmark next to Replace straight quotes with smart quotes. Click OK.
In the document, select and copy any example of a straight quote.
Paste this into both the Find and Replace textboxes in the Find and Replace dialog, and Replace All.

If the quotes still appear to be straight onscreen, it may just be that the page zoom is not large enough to display the difference.

    Keith,

You can use Autoformat (on the Format menu) to do this.

First set up the Options for Autoformat so it does nothing except 'Replace "straight quotes" with "smart quotes"'. On the Tools menu select Autocorrect...; in the Autocorrect dialogue click on the Autoformat page (not Autoformat as you type); you can also get here by clicking on the Options... button in the Autoformat dialogue. Set all the boxes to be unchecked except 'Replace "straight quotes" with "smart quotes" and Preserve Styles.

With these options set, when you run Autoformat from the Format menu it will do nothing except change straight quotes to 'smart' quotes.

As long as you have smart quotes switched on (as per the other posts above), yes, you just do exactly as you used to do in WordPerfect: replace " with " and Word knows which half to use automatically.

If you have texts of different languages (French and English for example) Autoformat works nicely, while search/replace will put in smart quotes corresponding to the Word language version.

I found the attached information at either this Lounge or from a terrific newsletter I subscribe to. I just thought I'd share this information just in case someone else out there could use it. It's been really valuable to our Document Centre when they convert WP legal documents to Word and the definitions included inside the quotes has to be bold face. So if the author is reading, Thanks a lot! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I guess it appeared not too long ago?
    Allen published <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Board=vb&Number=94407>a very slow and complicated macro</A> last November, and Dave Rado asked him why he didn't simply use a wildcard find/replace <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

BTW, it's much safer to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/ReplaceQuotes.htm>put in smart quotes first</A>, because else, the Find/Replace might easily get out of step if there is some single, widowed quote mark somewhere.
