Template - Read Only - Dialogue Box (XP)

I've created various templates (.dot files) in Word to automate my business tasks. Quite some time ago (I can't remember if it was when I upgraded to XP or 2000) Word began to prompt me "XXXXX.dot should be opened as read-only unless changes to it need to be saved. Open as read-only?" when ever I try to create a new document using the template. Is there anyway to get rid of this question? Why is trying to open up the template for editing instead of just giving me a new document based upon my template?

Your instinct to open the template is a good one. If you are using Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Open (you will see that New is the default; that would create a new document instead). I'm pretty sure the setting to suggest Read Only is under Tools, Options, Save, which also can be accessed through an obscure Tools menu in the Save As dialog. At least on Word 2000.
