There is a way to get the Product Key, but, as far as I know, there is no way to get the CD-key. Microsoft has tried to prevent any way of learning it by examining the registry--to prevent piracy. My guess is that they use some algorithm & store it as a binary file--just a guess.

Try this: Run regedit, expand the registry brances to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersion
The Product ID value should contain the CD key used to perform the last installation, and the Product Key should be just below that (This from David Karp, 'Windows 98 Annoyances' p.141 O'Reilly). I tried it, it works.

    Hi Mark:

That's great information. Apparently, it doesn't change when you upgrade. I started with Win98SE OEM version, upgraded to Win98SE retail (OEM is watered down). Although I needed the retail CD key when I upgraded, it isn't listed anywhere in the registry--only the original CD key is.

Win98SE OEM watered down from Retail SE?

Yikes! I didn't know that. How is OEM watered down from retail? (Hope this hasn't been discussed somewhere else, I haven't read all the Win98 posts yet)

I don't remember what's missing. It's not that you're missing the main functionality, but the CD comes with features that aren't on the OEM CDs. I vaguely recall something about Powertoys & Clipbook, but it's been awhile. I also liked the 90 days support because I haven't been very happy with support from computer manufacturers.
