Increase brightness

Is there any way for Windows to increase the brightness on my monitor? I've got the monitor's brightness turned up max, yet it is still dimmer than I'm used to & prefer working with. Some sort of global gamma correction or something? The video card is a standard Dell-type, but I don't know any more specifics.

Have you tried right-clicking on the desktop and looking at the Settings tab? There might be something there you can adjust. Also, have you checked in your Program folders for any type of monitor/video card settings or adjustment utility? You might also want to upgrade your video driver.

    Re: Increase brightness

I wasn't able to find any installed software options, but our computer repair guy suggested a hardware-based solution - replacing my 4+ year old monitor should brighten things up a bit.

I did start looking at Settings | Advanced and found some of my "missing" system details. ATI 3D Rage Pro 8MB video card running at the default refresh rate, with a 'generic' plug and play monitor (actually a Socos Non Interlaced). I check for driver updates on the Windows Update site but nothing particularly useful has ever shown up there.

Check the ATI web site for driver upgrades. Replacing the monitor will probably solve the problem, but installing a new driver might also install a control panel that will allow you to adjust brightness/contrast/gamma through software. Good luck!

You got it exactly right! I grabbed ATI's drivers and now have some added versatility. A little boost to the gamma was all that I needed to brighten things up, which should also go some small distance in reducing eye strain too.

I think one of the reasons I wear bifocals, besides age, is eye strain resulting from many hours in front of my monitor. Anything you can do to relieve eye strain is a good thing. I'm glad you're all set.

Thought I would post a useful tool for video cards that don't offer these facilities through the manufacturer.....PowerStrip. Nifty uiility that allows you to tweak your video card.
