IE 6.026 problem (6.026)

I recently upgraded to IE 6 -- now when I access it from Outlook 2000 via an email link and then close the window, I get the "illegal operation" dialog box and I can't close it. The box says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." IE seems to shut down, but the box absolutely will not be closed. I have to reboot to clear things. I can open IE again, but this stupid box sits there, so I assume something "bad" is happening. I've cleared out the old index.dat files and deleted the temporary internet files, but to no avail. Any ideas???

Unfortunately this is all too common when trying to marry Win 9x and IE6. I don't recommend it . Suggest you either upgrade your OS to XP, or do a fresh install of 98 which will roll back to the version shipped with your CD. If you want to update the browser, go as far as IE5.5 with patches, but no further.
IE 6 is undoubtedly better in many ways but it needs the right environment to strut its stuff.

That's one thing I was afraid of. We're probably going to upgrade all computers (this is a SOHO setting) to WIN 2000 soon -- will they play nicely together??

I am using WIN98 (PLAIN, ORIGINAL) and IE 6 WITHOUT any problems. I had to run both the repair for IE6 AND Office 2000 a few times but now everything works fine. Have you tried the repairs?

Click on CONTROL PANEL; ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS; Select the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Tools; click the option to repair.

Do the same for the Office.

Just because your 60-a-day habit hasn't killed you by the time you're 40, doesn't mean cigarette smoking is good for the general population. I make my judgements based on the sort of problems that come my way - and more than a few arise when IE6 and Win 9x are put together. I don't usually jump in with both feet until I know a little about the subject (though it has been known). I have no doubt that a considerable number of Win 9x problems could be solved by concentrated effort for a day or two - but could I ask what you think the point might be for a small business situation? Most of us just don't have that sort of time, or can afford to take that sort of risk. It's just so much easier in the long run to use the software as it was intended, and IE6 is meant to be used with NT based OSs.
For exactly the same reason I suggest to users that they do not try to install XP as an upgrade to Win 9x. It works, in a fashion and in some cases, as IE6 does in your set-up, but the extra coding required (kludges anyway) is fraught with potential difficulties. I trust you never come across them. I also VERY RARELY shout at people.

If you're about to upgrade to Win 2kP I wouldn't spend much time and effort (except out of general interest) in trying to make your previous combination work. You may well succeed, but in a SOHO you may not be able to afford the down-time I suspect may well be needed in due course.
Though IE 6 works well with 2kP, you need to bear in mind that MS have stated that the only OS they'll support a couple of years down the line will be XP. I like Win2k, but I would not now buy it new.
However, my opinion is not the be all and end all, though I do weigh carefully the pros and cons before handing out advice. That given on the Lounge is free, and you choose whatever course of action suits you. In any case, we'll still be here to get you productive again should things go pear-shaped. If it's your living (not to mention your peace of mind) that's at stake, spend the extra on getting reliability. 2k and XP are an order of magnitude more stable than 98. I'll stake my reputation (such as it is) on it.

Thanks for the advice <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> -- I like to hear any and all -- I'm going to Win2kp at this point -- in a couple of years, it will be more obvious what the next step should be.
I've reverted to IE 5.5 sp2 for the time being to try getting my system back in order. Of course, I've done something that has caused another problem. I can't get Outlook 2000 to open. A dialog box with the lovely message "An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run Setup again for the program."
I've repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc for several hours. Nothing has fixed the OLE problem.
I've posted a plea in the Outlook area of the Lounge. Any advice on this one?????
