Looks interesting but I noticed GIF format is not available in the free version.

Re: Hardcopy

I saved as a .bmp, opened in PhotoEditor and saved as a .gif.
It is a pity - they probably expect there to be a demand for .gif output and make their registration fees that way.

They're right, too. I'll pay $15 for GIF capability.

BTW that's a gi-normous bandwidth-hogging attachment. Do you think you could reduce it a bit?

Tx for the info Lief. Got it. Now using it.

Biggest problem I had was figuring out how to disable the automatic "hardcopy" option, other than turning off my printer.

For others info, these are my setup notes on the package.
--------------------------------------------------------
Print function most useful via new printer icon added to Title Bar icons.

Use Configure Settings|Functions to disable printer and set default to rectangle.

Hardcopy must be started before print icon is available on new windows.

Tell me about it - and the 2000 trees I'm probably responsible for getting cut down....

Yes - highly preferable to get something like right_mouse opens up the application from the sys tray.

Latest release works fine with WinXP. Another great multi-OS app.

Re: Hardcopy

Lief, Eileen, Ian--Thanks for the information on HardCopy. To answer your question I have
tried both opening Paint when I hit Alt and PrtScn and waiting to open it. It hasn't made any
difference plus if you wanted to take a desk top picture, I suppose if it were necessary to
open paint concommitantly with hitting those keys, you'd have to minimize it to get it out of the way.
The problem has been that when you hit Edit>Paste, Paste is ghosted out and their is no
paste function working--i.e. it won't paste when paste is ghosted. If I click the pen or one of
the iconnettes in Paint, then Paste will unghost, but it won't paste anyway.
I have some questions from the recent posts:
1) The only way I can see these posts is to click on the link I was emailed. They don't show
up if you go to the lounge and hit the problem I posted.
2) From Eileen's comment does this mean that you need the gif functionality to print a screen
picture--in other words from what you say it's very well worth having--but preceisely what does
the free version do and what does it not do that makes so much difference that Eileen underscored.
What makes it such a great app?
3) What tweaks once I get it do I have to apply to keep conflicts from happening--the ones
Leif referred to when he referenced the printer.

Thanks very much. This must be the application I need instead of going out and buying other
more expensive print screen apps offered on the web.
Also I would really appreciate if someone would explain what the free version does and does not do.
Also I am trying to figure out why Edit>Paste gives me a ghosted non-working Paste. It worked
with Win ME as awful a memory leake and chain blue screen stop message promulgator
as Windows ME was. I have had trouble getting Paint to work as an XP Accessory. I don't know
if that is an XP glitch.
Thanks for your time.

Re: Hardcopy

Defrag,

#1 - can you post that as a separate problem in the Lounge Matters forum - anyone else with the same affliction will be able to find the answer there.

#2 - gif and png are two of the most efficient formats for simple graphics and are thus ideal for posting quick screen-grabs here. (In fact I use Hardcopy for doing that far more than for my own use now!) Typically a jpg may be 5-10 times the size of an equivalent gif.
From memory, the only limitation is the number of file formats you can save in with the free version, plus a lack of documentaion. There is a product comparison chart on the site, but I think they've got the English and German pages mixed up!

#3 - Again from memory, I believe the default setting when I first installed it was for the PrntScrn button to do what it says and print the screen - hence my comment about using up trees! Once you start looking at all the customization feautures, you can define any keys to do a miriad of functions. (Hardcopy needs to be running for these to be effective.) I now have the PrntScrn button open up a cross-hair which I use for selecting a small part of the screen.

To be honest, I only use it for a fraction of what it can be used for. With it running, it just sits in the SysTray quietly until you ask it to do something. Images can be annotated, cursors can be added plus all the usual drawing tools. You can set it up in 'recorder' mode where it will grab a screen shot every x seconds and save the image to disc.

You really need to give it a go.

Re: Hardcopy

Leif,

Perhaps its the aging process but I ran into a small problem with Hardcopy when I visited the home page and noticed that there is a brand new version available as of September 1st. I clicked on the "Download" link, downloaded what I thought was this latest updated version and went about the installation process. But when I checked the "Help/About", the version was not the newest one but an earlier one. Also, I was unable to save any screenshots in ".gif" format. The answer to this problem is that registered users have a "special" URL given to them at the time of registration which takes you to a different download page where not only the latest updated version and related files can be downloaded, but "frees up" such features as being able to save captured screenshots in ".gif", etc.

Thanks for your help! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

BTW, the possibilities that one can do with Hardcopy are still overwhelming! <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15>
