    normal.dot (Word XP)

I was recently asked to fix a problem with Word on a friends system. So I don't know all the details on what they may done to create the scenario. When you open a blank word doc it was opening with a graph paper background very small squares under normal view. I couldn't find any settings to remove the graph paper image so I deleted the normal.dot and let word make a new one. The normal view is plain white now but if you select web view the graph paper background is still there.
I need to know how the graph image was created and how to remove it. I've tried several things on my own system can't recreate the situation.
Its not causing any problems just want to know.

It sounds like gridlines are being displayed.

To turn them on/off display the drawing toolbar. Click draw and then grid for all the options.

No gride lines, tried that already, the gridelines that showup are smaller like 1/8" squares. Just can't figure how they were created to remove them.
    Tks

I wonder if changes were made to 'background' and saved to normal.dot? Can't think of anything else but whatever the changes were they've stuck to 'normal'dot.

I replaced the normal.dot and the graph image only shows up in web view.

It is a web background then and will have no effect on the document when printed or viewed in any other view.

What about editing normal.dot itself (not a blank document based on normal.dot). When you have normal.dot open in Word, switch to Web Layout view. If you see the graph paper background (or even if you don't), select Format/Backgrond and choose "No Fill". Then save normal.dot back out to disk.

    Maybe this will work?
