Different TAB settings for Portrait & Landscaped (WORD 97/2000)

Hi.

Is it possible to set different TABS for landscaped and portrait pages?

I am creating a template that would allow the user to have mixture of portrait/landscape pages in a document. The headers/footers have information that needs to be left, centred, right justified (such as CHAPTER TITLE (left), Page Number (right), Copyright notice (centre)). I have odd/even headers/footers unfortunately.

The problem occurs when I move to the next LANDSCAPED page after filling in the first pages (e.g. by pressing enter until next page). The TABS are reset as if it is a PROTRAIT page.

There can only be one default tab setting (e.g., every half inch) for an entire document. To set different tabs for different parts of the document, you have to consciously set tabs for a style or set of paragraphs. You could conceivably define a NormalLand style for the Landscape section, but if users copy from there to the other parts of the document, it could get real messy real fast. In a header and footer, this is less likely to be an issue, so it might be safe there (e.g., HeaderLand, FooterLand styles).

This may be saying what Jefferson said but in a slightly different way.

There are styles called Header and Footer already defined. When you View | Header-Footer, you'll see a style called Header in the Style drop-down if you're in the Header area, similarly for footer. These assume a portrait orientation.

What I do is define a separate style called HeaderLand and FooterLand and change the tab settings so that center and right are appropriate for a landscape pg. I then change the style used in the landscape orientation to these styles.

Now what would be neat is if a macro could detect the page orientation for a section (since you need a section break to change orientation) and set the correct styles to be used for the headers and footers in that section. But that's beyond me.

I think it would not be too terrible to record an "AddLand" macro of (1) insert section break, (2) change orientation, (3) view header, (4) break the "same as previous," (5) change the style, (6) view the footer, (7) break the "same as previous," (8) change the style, and (9) view the document again. I can't say for sure it would work, but if this is something you find yourself doing often, it would be worth a try. I guess you would need a corresponding one for the next section...

agreed, the macro recording you suggest seems simple and it should work. I was thinking of something a little different. Have a loop that goes thru all the sections of a document. For each section, check the page orientation and set the hdr/ftr style accordingly (probably have to assume some name for the style). That's beyond my means and I don't even know if it's possible. Just seems like it should be. But your approach seems like it would even be better since you'd be adding the landscape section and all the corresponding breaks.

I do have macro that does pretty much what Jefferson suggests. Creating a new LANDSCAPED section with proper headings/footers works fine. The only problem is that the header/footer tabs get mixed up once I ADD a new page to a landscaped section and then move UP/DOWN the document.

I shall look into it bit more.

I'm thinking this may be because you have different first page, or different odd and even pages? Would that cause some mix up? That's my shot in the dark...

Yes.

I'd suggest doing this wit a macro that inserts a new section. The macro would set the headers/footers any which way but loose, according to your pleasure.
