    Numbered Lists & Local Formatting (word97/sr2)

    Andrew will probably add to this dialogue once he sees these posts local formatting numbered lists

    Here's a neat trick in Word97SR2 (O.K. It's really something I don't understand at all, but it sounds better if I make it look like a "design feature").

    Start a new document.

    Assign ListNumber2 style to the opening paragraph.

    Type a few short-line paragraphs.

    Before pressing ENTER on the latest paragraph, use Shift-Home to select the text to the start of the (ListNumber2) paragraph; choose Ctrl-I to set local character formatting. The selected text appears in Italics (paragraph numbered 3 in my example)

    Press Enter and start typing the next paragraph (numbered 4 in my example). Odd, eh? Use Ctrl-space mid-paragraph to restore normal character formatting.

    Press Enter and start typing the next paragraph (numbered 5 in my example). Odd, eh? The supposedly local CHARACTER formatting carries over into the next paragraph!

    Hi Chris,

    It's the same in Word 2000. Usually, if you type italic and then press Ctrl-Spacebar to the left of the paragraph mark, the paragraph mark will become normal. In the list/bullet style, it stays italic (you'll have to choose a font where the italic paragraph mark *looks* italic, like "Courier New", to see that).
    Since the numbering gets the formatting from the paragraph mark, it stays italic, too.

    I'll try to restrain myself.

    I'm sure its a design feature because its listed in the KB article <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=114901&page= 0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=7&vc=1> Keeping Chris entertained</A> <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

    I did notice that if you Shift-Home Shift-RightArrow before making it italic then the paragraph mark is unafflicted by the local change so it does appear that someone in Microsoft actually spent time coding to produce the behaviour you have discovered.

    > I did notice that if you Shift-Home Shift-RightArrow

    Did you mean "starting from a position to the left of the paragraph mark, right-arrow and then Shift Home"?

    If my local formatting is applied so as not to include the character immediately preceding the paragraph mark, then it doesn't carry over.

    I suspect I just got confused by the paragraph mark. After all, if I apply local formatting up to the insertion point, then that local formatting continues to be in force with the next character I type, regardless of the intervention of a paragraph mark.

    This can be easily demonstrated by typing text within a chunk of text that has been italicised; tapping the Enter key then splits the paragraph into two paragraphs, each with local formatting still in force, continuing in italic mode. I just happened to be at a point in my paragraph where there were zero characters between my insertion point and the next paragraph amrk.

    In other words, Word is indeed behaving as it should; I had forgotten that local formatting can span Paragraph boundaries.

    Hi Chris,

    > Word is indeed behaving as it should

    I don't think so. In normal (non-list) paragraphs (with the cursor right in front of the paragraph mark), the paragraph mark changes from italic to normal if I hit Ctrl+spacebar -- not so in list paragraphs.

    I guess Word messes up in lists because the formatting of the number and the formatting of the paragraph mark are linked somehow.

    >paragraph mark changes from italic to normal

    I had typed the following:

    <font color=red>
    There's an anomaly somewhere!

    Neither on List or non-list paragraphs can I get my Paragraph mark to change slope.

    I'm running what I think is a very simple test: Create a batch of paragraphs, place the insertion point immediately to the left of the paragraph mark, select a Paragraph Style, Italicize. The paragraph mark does not change to a sloped paragraph mark.
    </font color=red>

    Then I looked more closely. By using Ctrl-] to magnify the font to 40-point, I can indeed see a change in the Paragraph Mark. It's a small change, but it's a change none the less. (There's a change for Bold, too).

    How did you spot that change? It's practically insignificant to this eye, naked or clothed with prescription reading glasses.

    Re: Numbered Lists & Local Formatting (word97/sr2)

    Hi Chris,

    I changed the font to Courier New. The paragraph mark never looks italic in Arial and TNR <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>
    But the toolbar button for "italic" or Shift-F1 should show the formatting.
