Populate form based on value entered (Access 97)
I am an ACCESS newbie. I have a student database, would like to
know how to do the following:
When the user enters first and last name of a student, if the
record exists, I would like to display the record (student
information) and allow the record to be modified. If the record does
not exist, allow the user to enter student information.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Populate form based on value entered (Access 97)
Frankly, I don't think that is the best way to do it. It generally is confusing to have a field used for lookup and as a data field in a record. That is, when I start typing in that field, am I changing the name on the existing record, or trying to lookup a new student? Also, you have the problem of students with the same name. If you already have a Frank Smith, you won't be able to add another Frank Smith because you will always call-up the existing one to change!
I suggest a separate combobox to be used to find a name. If the name isn't in the combo dropdown, then the user can opt to create a new student record.
