use menu File>Open -result all docs are text files (W97 sr2a)

HIya - I wonder if anyone has come across this issue.

One particular user when they use the word menu
File>Open - navigate to find word file, & select a word file to Open

The result is the word file opens
however no formatting is contained in the doc.
The file is like a .txt file.
no formatting - where there are our custom word fields
it actually displays the field code details
eg 'SET mAttentionType "N" ' etc.

also when the file is opening up in word
on the task bar a message is displayed
    Word is converting 02...
& then opens as a .txt file.

    I have re-imaged pc & reinstalled office 97.
I have reset the Standard toolbar that has the open button.
I've checked the default Save format option ie if saving in another word version eg Word 6.0/95(*.doc)
& its set to Word 97.
    no success.
Any ideas - thanks in advance Diana

Is the text of the document followed by style names, properties, user name, template name, etc.? If so, the usual cause is that the file "type" is the Recover Text From Any File converter. If not, hmmm, any other clues?

    Hi -
At the end of the text in the doc - ie the end of the doc, displays all word heading styles & word field codes etc.
So your right with file type being opened as 'AutoRecover'.
For the users that had this issue - I blew away the users Windows NT profile on the network & on their pcs
    & it resovled.
However I dont know how & where, or how its related to storeing Word file types with their profiles? DO you?

The file type used in File Open is pretty sticky: if the user opened a file with the Recover Text from Any File filter, closes Word and restarts it, it will still be listed as the File Type in the File Open dialog. I have no idea where this is saved, but your test suggests it is the registry. I think it's a training issue: users should be trained to spot this problem and correct it on their own, assuming it is as simple as checking the File Type when they open a document. You also could customize Word so that the Recover Text filter is not installed...it really does not seem to have a lot of uses, other than to see your (or other peoples') metadata.
