    Printer fonts (Word 2000/SR-1)

<img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23> Is there any way to use a printer font, NOT A TRUETYPE font, in Word.

Why -- you ask? Because our faxing software, RightFax (Capteris) needs to read an embedded code in Courier (not Courier New) because the document is being converted to PCL format and only native printer fonts are stored in the PCL file. If you don't use native printer fonts, the codes themselves appear in the fax instead of being replaced by the information or instruction they represent. The preceding verbatim from RightFax's documentation.

Although we can handle this on an individual basis by making a font substitution through the local printer driver, we have been asked to find a firmwide solution, if possible, within Word itself.

We tried setting the font substitution directly on the print server, but the option isn't even available and yes, it is the same driver. Must be differences in the OS (?).
    Thanks for any help.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why can't you just pick a printer font using the Font dropdown?

If you've installed the right printer driver, the printer fonts show up in the list with little printer icons next to them.

Did you want an automated solution?

<img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> You're right, of course. However, we're not using that printer driver for general printing (rather old -- HP LaserJet 4) that has those fonts, so they don't appear in the dropdown.

After some registry hacking, I think I've found the registry file that contains the font substitution information for current driver. It's not too big so we'll see if we can distribute it to all our desktops.

    Thanks all the same.
