    Unwanted Automatic DialUp Connection

My computer - one of three on a home network and using ICS - inexplicably dials up an unwanted connection to my ISP. I've immediately checked Task Manager and System Infromation trying to locate the program that's triggering the dialup to no avail. Is there a network tool around that monitors what program triggers this so that I stop it. To overcome the problem, I've taken to ripping the phone connection out of the wall socket! An ungracious exit but extremely effective.

Could be spyware. Scan your system with AdAware - free from my website.

I've noted that Outlook does this on receipt of an HTML message. If you have "automatically connect" enabled, you can turn it off and maintain some control until you determine what it is.

Ciritical Update Notification will also pull this stunt, if you've installed it. What is running in your task list? Is this consistent?

Certainly looks as though spyware was the culprit. Picked up AdWare from MerCurmudgeon linked pages and all three computers were riddled with various types of spyware. Since removing this stuff, there's been no problem. It's kinda like corporate theft isn't it, to secretly install software on computers that allow the system to do things that you either don't want or denies you the ability to choose options. Thanks, Mer (incidentally, your site is a treasure trove of goodies)

btw, you are, I assume, running a firewall such as Zone Alarm? This stops trojans dialling out without permission.
