    Can't find CD Drives

I just installed a HD driver update from the Microsoft Products Update web page to my Windows 98 system. The exact driver is "Intel Corporation - Storage - version 12/10/2001 - was successfully installed. 1:48:00 PM Tuesday, February 12, 2002 : 76035".
Now Windows --> Control Panel or --> Add New Hardware can't find either my CD reader or writer. How do I get my CD reader and writer back?

I also installed the HD driver update this past weekend. I lost the cd player, the zip drive, and the internal modem immediately following the installation.

So how did your get your peripherals back? Did you have to:
    1. Turn-off computer.
    2. Disconnect the power to the peripherals.
    3. Start the computer.
    4. Turn-off the computer again.
    5. Re-connect the peripherals.
    6. Re-start the computer and let Windows automatically find them as plug and play devices.
If so, did that work? Is there an easier way to get them back?

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

If I delete the old Hard Disk Controllers from my Device Manager, will Windows find my CD-R and CD-RW?
After I installed the driver update, my two older Hard Disk Controllers (Primary and Secondary Ultra ATA Controllers) appeared with an exclaimation point on a yellow background. Is it safe to remove them?

Those are the same questions I was hoping one of the Windows 98 experts would answer. Evidently you and I are the only ones who downloaded the driver or we're the only ones who got hit or we're the only ones who read these postings.

If you remove them, and reboot, they should - key word there - should be re-detected. Make sure you have your Windows CD ROM handy.

I don't know exactly what the IDE driver update consisted of, but it sounds a lot like the Intel Application Accelerator, which has caused a lot of people grief - and in many cases, the only solution was to wipe and re-install.

Another alternative is to restore a previous registry version using SCANREG /RESTORE, but this won't replace the drivers - if the original ones were overwritten, then you need to extract the originals from the CD.

I also installed this Intel driver from the Windows Update web site. the only way I could get the stability of my Windows 98 SE system back was to restore the Ghost copy of the system disk that I took just before doing the update!

Interestingly I am no longer offered this driver by Windows Update, since I have identical hardware and software to the time I was offered the update I suspect they must have removed it.

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

I took the computer box to my local mechanic and he got rid of the offending driver, restored the other drivers, and did a couple of things I didn't understand. But, everything works ok again. His advice was to never download drivers from Microsoft again.

I'll second that advice! Every time that I have ever gone to the Windows Update page and "updated" my device drivers I have had to "remove" the device entirely and let Windows detect the "new" hardware and either set it up with its default install drivers or hunt around for my own install disk. It seems as though Microsoft's new drivers might interface with Windows better but forget that they have to still work with the equipment. <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15>

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

I'm still in the same predicament.
I disconnected both my CD-R and my CD-RW drives (power and bus). then I started up the computer. Shut down again. Reconnected my CD-R drive. Started-up again. Windows didn't automatically find my drive. Windows couldn't find it as new hardware.
I tryed to remove the new driver from the Device Manager. Couldn't do it.
So I'm back to my original question, what can I do to get my CD-R and CD-RW drives back?

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

Can I use my Windows 98 Start-up Disk? Does that have an option for starting-up with a CD drive? If so, should I use it to re-install Windows? Is that my best option?

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

    Do it once again:

    1. Disconnect your CD-ROM drive and switch on your computer.
    2. Boot to Safe mode (pressing F5 during bootup or pressing F8 and choosing "Safe Mode" from the menu).
    3. When in Safe Mode, open Control Panel | System | Device Manager and REMOVE all hard disk controllers.
    4. Shut down the computer.
    5. Connect CD-ROM drive.
    6. Power up the computer. Let Wizard recognize your IDE controllers and drives. If prompted, insert your Win98 Installation CD.

Only if it will not work, re-install Windows.

    Re: Can't find CD Drives

If I recall correctly, my service person first removed the new driver. Then, he downloaded (old or original) drivers and installed them. The yellow exclamation marks are gone. After that, everything worked. There have been some minor problems but nothing major since.
