    New IE Patch - Security Update (5.x - 6.x)

    What is going on here?

    Is this the critical update orginally posted as "07 February 2002 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer" with Security Bulletin MS02-005 producing the message: "The page you're looking for has been moved or removed from the site."??

    I checked this morning and Microsoft no long shows any Critical updates for my system.
    Can this thing really be trusted???

    I just checked again, and both updates appear functional. I downloaded the later patch this morning and had no issues.

    Now, about trusting an update.... <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>....if you've ever been burned by a Service Pack, you trust nothing but you take chances anyway! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Yes, I think it's fine. I've applied it on three machines so far, and had no resulting issues. If you're checking Windows Update they are notoriously slow to add these kinds of things to the site as a Critical Update.

    Are both updates needed?
    I don't want to seem too picky; but, the Feb 7th statement was:
    "... update eliminates all known security vulnerabilities affecting Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2), as well as six new vulnerabilities, ..."
    and now I can not find it.??

    I believe only the update from February 11 is necessary. It depends on your browser version, though, so check to make sure it is applicable. It's possible that it's included in the later release but I didn't read all the fine print to be sure.

    Just confirmed this via <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wininformant.com>WinInfo</A> - the February 11 release is all that you need to apply. XP users will get this via Windows Upate or Auto Update, and all other users need to download it.

    These fixes are also scheduled to be included in Windows 2000 SP3 and the soon-to-be-released IE 6 SP1.

    Thanks for you information.
    I installed the 5.5 SP2 version yesterday with no apparent ill effects.
    Interesting side point, I would not have been able to locate the download patch without your previous message.
    MS has removed the Feb 7 critical notice from Win 98 services. I checked my wife's laptop this morning and I can find no way to locate this "critical update" from the "windowsupdate.microsoft.com/" site on either of our computers.

    Is MS abandoning it's WIn 98 customers?

    Not abandoning - not yet anyway - but that day is coming.

    Microsoft takes some extra time to get stuff like this on Windows Upate. I will never understand why. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> It pays to have a few sources that you can check for things like this. This is one of the reasons I am a big fan of Paul Thurrott - and Woody for that matter - because the updates are there, and a real world perspective accompanies it.

    I'd lay money (ok, maybe I wouldn't) that this appears in Windows Update over the next few weeks. Perhaps they will toss it out there as IE 6 SP 1, and force you to download THAT if you want the latest security. I remember griping about Outlook 98 requiring IE 4, which I hated at the time - and just about everything else required IE as well shortly thereafter. But I digress. <img src=/S/yadda.gif border=0 alt=yadda width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/yadda.gif border=0 alt=yadda width=15 height=15>

    Pass the information along to people you know, and refer them back to that link - word of mouth will at least make sure that it gets around even if it doesn't show up on Windows Update!

    Not to put too fine a point on, but Microsoft put an update out on Friday, Feb 7 for 5.5 SP2 without having the Bulletin in place. Then pulled it. With no pointers for us 5.5 folks on the Feb 11 IE 6 version.

    Have you run across any background on what happened?
