2nd OS

I installed w2K in our family PC. Now, my kids favorite games will not run. I would like to keep W2K and install WinME on a 2nd drive. Is that possible? Any assistance is appreciated!

Hi
It sure is, though Windows ME I would not recommend. However, that's what you have so there's no reason not to try it.
I have a feeling that ME, like Win98 is best installed first. I have a multi-boot system and this (in not too great detail) is the sequence I would have used in your position:

1. back up unique data, downloaded programs etc.
2. using your boot floppy get to a C: prompt and using FDisk, make 3 partitions on your HD. Note that this wipes everything out.
3. Re-format your new partitions, using the /s switch for the primary DOS partition, C:
4. Install the earliest OS first to C:
5. Install Win 2k. I prefer to keep FAT32 rather than NTFS, which would make the partition invisible to ME.
6. Re-install your apps, using the 3rd partition. This could, in many cases, save the need to have 2 versions on your HD. (If 2k and ME require different versions, put them on their respective drives).

Before you do any of this read this MS KB article.

Second to Merc, have you tried using compatibility mode?

I've also discovered with some software, kid games in particular that some creative noodling with things makes them work. Things such as using 8.3 compliant names:

C:Progra~1games as opposed to C:Program Filesgames

And I have also had them complain that there was no room in the swap file - it was about 1.1GB (don't ask) and the program couldn't understand something that big, so it simply decided that it couldn't exist at all. Changing the swap file to 999MB solved that one.

Of course, my kids are small enough still that if I'm in the mood to put up with a bit of complaining they have no choice. A few more years, and I will have my PC under lock and key and they will have one of their own - without the Internet!

I wholly agree with Merc though; ME will give you fits. Try to dig up Winders 98 and throw that on instead.

Re: 2nd OS

If you want to have other O/S installed alongside 2k you have to install in the following order:
1. Win 9x /NT4 (not sure if those two are fussy about installation order in relation to each other)
2. Win ME
3. Win 2K Pro
4. Win 2K Server

Or install Win XP in a second partition.

Or buy them a couple of NEW games that they may like, which run under Win 2000, and they may even forget about the others.

Always install NT4 after 9x - as 9x will disable the boot.ini for NT4. In other words, if you install 9x second, you'll have to go back and "rescue" your NT4 installation. HTH
