Star Offfice 5.1 - Thoughts?

I'm setting up an old PC for the kids to do their homework / surf the net etc - will be part of my SOHO network.
OS is NT4.
Planning to install Star Office 5.1 for all the obvious reasons.
Anybody got any thoughts as to how well this will work in the medium term?

Bubs, I have found Star office 5.1 to be heavy on resources. They do have a new version coming out 6.0 which I believe is better in that department. It doesn't insist on taking over the entire desktop like 5.1 did as well. I actually prefer Suite602. Like Star Office it is free, and comes with word processor, spreadsheet, and photo editor. Compatible with MS Office as well.

I have used StarOffice 5.1 and 5.2 - 5.2 does have some improvement and bug fixes. Running StarOffice on our old Pentium 120Mhz / 48Mb ram is painful - it takes ages to load up. But on our newer computer it runs fine. The word processor and drwaing tools are great - I haven't used the PIM/e-mail client or the browser much though.

Hi.

Its on a pentium 100mhz with 128mb RAM - seems to load OK.

5.1 got its first outing 2 days ago - me acting as typist for 10 year old's home work...... Very impressed with the w/p package, tho' of course its a bit frustrating at first if one is used to MS Word.

Will be trying to set up the email client in the next few weeks - we'll see!

Agreed - I suspect most who lounge and use DBs have quite enough 'fun' wrestling with Jet and SQL without learning another system!
