How to remove program in Start Up

I accidentally installed a program and it opens automatically every time I turn on the computer. I don't want it to do this. How do I fix this without uninstalling the program and starting over? Please help. Thanks.

Re: How to remove program in Start Up

Does it appear in your Start > Programs > Startup folder?
    If so:
    Start > Settings > Taskbar & Start Menu >
    Advanced > Advanced
Navigate to the Startup Folder and either move it to somewhere else, or just delete it.

    If it is not there:
    Start > Run
    [Enter] MSConfig [Return]
and de-select it from the list.

Re: How to remove program in Start Up

No, it doesn't appear in the Startup folder. The problem I am having is with Kazaa (sharing program).

I shut down the computer, then start it up again. All my icons appear at the bottom of the screen (including Kazaa). Then a much larger Kazaa (half the screen size) picture (icon?) appears and disappears. When I place the mouse on the little Kazaa icon on the bottom of the screen (I assume this is called the system tray?), it tells me that Kazaa is connected. I do remember when when I last exited from Kazaa, I actually hit the "disconnect" button.

Also, when the computer starts up again, there is a message from "Internet Explorer Script" stating that "an error has occurred in the script on this page". The rest of the message says:
    Line: 288
    Char: 10
    Error: Object Expected
    Code: 0
    URL: http://desktop.kazaa.com/en/kmdstart...nt=kmd&ver=134.
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? Yes, No.

Please help - should I just de-install Kazaa? Thanks.

Uninstall it if you don't need it.

Have you tried running MSConfig to see if it is there?

The larger window briefly appearing sounds like the program itself starting, then disappearing to run in the background. The Internet Explorer message sounds like Kazaa has hijacked something - I'd be inclined to dump it, download <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.lsfileserv.com/index.html>AdAware</A> and see what trail it has left.

I'm afraid I've never heard of Kazaa - a quick visit to their website doesn't leave me impressed. What were you using it for?

Re: How to remove program in Start Up

Regarding MSConfig -- yesterday I tried "Start" "Run". The next step was: OPEN: netstat-r, then "yes", "cancel", "browse". I didn't know what to do, so I didn't do anything.

    What does AdAware do?

    Kazaa is similar to Napster.

    Thanks.

Hang on - you are on Windows 2000, yes? - If so, forget about MSConfig.

AdAware: "Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware and scumware components and lets you remove them safely." - and is highly recommended by many users here.

First question: Do you want to keep Kazaa installed?
From your opening question, you don't want to have it run, but you don't want to uninstall it. It may be the nature of the beast that it runs from Startup and automatically tries to connect to the interent and you have no choice.

    Yes, I'm on Windows 2000.
    I'll give AdAware a try.
Yes, I want to keep Kazaa, but I don't want it to be continuously running - only when I want it to. I did notice that it isn't in my Startup folder, but it is in "Program Files" in my hard drive.

    Click Start | Run, type
    REGEDIT
and hit Enter. Check the following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun

and delete all string values reffering to Kazaa or its files. This will prevent Kazaa to load at startup.
