Keyboard doesn't work

My keyboard was working fine until it decided to lock up. I have removed from the HD and hooked it back up again - nothing happens. What am I doing wrong. Please help. Thanks.

Re: Keyboard doesn't work

Any other clues?
Had you installed anything immediately prior to it stopping working?
Did it just stop after a boot-up, or just at some random point?

I hope you did not unplug it and plug it back in with your PC running....

Power down, leave off for 5 minutes, then restart - does it work?
If not, shutdown and restart in Safe Mode - does it work?

Re: Keyboard doesn't work

1. No, I did not install anything prior to the keyboard locking up.
2. It locked up after I did a Ctrl-Alt-Delete (the screen froze up).
3. Yes, while the screen was frozen, I did unplug and plug in the keyboard.
4. I did power down, then restarted - it did not work.
5. How do I get to Safe Mode?

For Safe Mode in Windows 2000, you have to press the F8 key at bootup, before you see the white screen with the logo.

Make sure that your keyboard is plugged in when you power up, or you will not be able to use it. Typically a computer will tell you no keyboard is present and to press F1 to continue .

You could also take the keyboard to a different PC and plug it in, and see if it works there. That's the best way to rule out a part of the problem - if the keyboard is defective, the problem will follow it to another PC. If it works fine on a different system, you're looking at a problem with the CPU (in this case meaning the whole box, containing the guts) or software (Windows 2000).

Re: Keyboard doesn't work

Unfortunately, if your kb connector is PS/2, unplugging it whilst running may well have damaged the motherboard. The only common hot-swappable connectors are USB. If you try another kb (or try your kb on another system) and they work in both cases, you've blown that PS/2 port on your machine. There may be a spare one (if you have a serial or USB mouse).

Keyboard is acting up again - not working. Nothing works on it. I went into the control panel, clicked on keyboard - the message I got was "this device cannot start (Code 10). What is going on? Can anyone help? Thanks.

Re: Keyboard doesn't work

There appears to be a problem starting a service somewhere, or a device controller that runs the keyboard. Does the keyboard work if you boot to a DOS prompt? You'll need a disk of course. Alternately you could boot with the Win2000 CD and see if the keyboard works in the setup console. If it does, I'd strongly recommend that you run a repair and let it check all system files.

Never did hear if this keyboard works at another computer though. That is your easiest way to check and see if it is Windows or the KB.

eeeks, sounds too complicated. As for the keyboard working elsewhere, I'll have to try that.

Re: Keyboard doesn't work

Have you got a keyboard that allows programming of special keys to launch programs such as a web browser, your e-mail client, etc...?

I had a problem at work with such a keyboard, and the software running the keyboard's extra buttons, conflicted with another piece of software (virus scanner I think).

Since it was on my computer, I just disabled the special keys since I never really use them anyways.

What? No button for the 'commode'?
I disabled all of my 'special' keyboard keys that came with my eMachines - absolutely useless - 17 keys that mean nothing to me, from 'banking' to 'my site' . Just like I disabled the DVD-software that came with the DVD-ROM in this machine.
