    Auto Numbering (Word XP)

I have converted a document from WP 9. My auto-numbering has Roman Numerals for Level 1 and then Level 2 includes Level 1+ .01. My problem is that I don't want Roman Numerals in Level 2; therefore, I want my second paragraph of section 4 to read 4.02 and not IV.02. Is this possible in the Number Setup of Word?

I don't know how well this matches with Word XP, but here's how you do it in Word 2000. Go to Format/Bullets and Numbering, select your numbering scheme if it is not already selected, then click on Customize. Set the level 1 numbering for Roman numerals. Select the level 2 numbering. You should see a "More" button on this screen. Click on it and at the bottom of the window, you'll see a check box beside ""Legal style numbering". If you check this, it will change your level 2 numbering from I.1 to 1.1.

If you were in Word 2000, I'd include the obligatory lecture (or rant in some people's case!) about not even trying to use Word's automatic numbering without linking it to a style. I suspect the same thing holds true in XP, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks a lot! This conversion stuff is blocking my brain from the obvious. <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>

    Well, you're certainly not the first person to have THAT problem! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
