    Restart Hangup

I'm stumped.... Dealing with a friend's 98-based PC. If I do a "Shutdown" -- machine shuts down normally. When I push the "on" button (warm start) the machine boots normally. No problems. If I do a "Restart", machine seems to shutdown normally, goes through the self test, I get the "Windows98" screen, the hard disk is being accessed......and then it stops. Dead in the water. I finally have to hit the "On" button (reset), get the normal warnings about incorrect shutdown (but no disk scan), then get the "Start in Normal Mode, Safe Mode, Step-By-Step Mode, etc." If I select normal, machine continues to boot then hangs for about 10 seconds, comes back with "Windows did not start normally" and get the "Start in Normal Mode, Safe Mode, Step-by-Step Mode" again. If I select Normal, the machine proceeds to start up and run fine. Remember, this only happens from restart or CTRL-ALT-DEL. A normal shutdown and normal start have no problems. I've been through the Cold Boot "rule-out" process but can find nothing wrong. Suggestions? Hints? Or do I just tell my friend to live with it until his PC dies and get an XP-based machine?

    Re: Restart Hangup

We have a couple of PC's in the office that behave very similarly, but they are more likely to lock up on a cold boot when they are first turned on in the morning. Once they are up and running they are dependable and so we look at it as more of a nuisance than a problem, but we would like to find a fix for this too... maybe one solution will fix both problems?

I just booted up our usual non-starter and Windows did come up all the way the first time. I was watching the scrolling at the bottom of the splash screen though, and it looked like it was about to lock up: The scroll would slow down, stop/start/stop/start, and run really choppy during the 'second' showing of the splash screen. Is this at all like what you are seeing?

Nope. No double display of the splash screen or a "stop/start" jerky problem. You might want to take a look at article Q150516 in Microsoft's Knowledge Base in the Support Center at microsoft.com that deals with a system hanging at the splash screen. Q188867 deals with methods to troubleshoot general startup issues in WIN98. Good luck. In my case, I'm going to probably force my friend's system to do a full boot rather than a fast boot from restart. That will at least hide the problem until I can figure out what's going on.

    Re: Restart Hangup

The same thing (I think) happens to me all to regularly. (deep breath)
Boot-up takes long enough, but then I have to sit there and watch the screen, looking for the telltale signs I've picked up: If the Office toolbar starts up but stays visible on the screen: bad sign. If the taskbar starts up and the systray populates with 1 or 2 icons but then goes blank and expands to its regular length, but with no visible icons - bad sign. If the (Epson) printer startup program flashes on the screen for a second and disappears (into the systray) - good sign. If it stays on the screen - doomed. As soon as the systray populates again I know I'm ok; but if it stays blank, and the START button goes white - it's all over. Time to warm boot. In my paranoia I refuse to even hit ESC to bypass the RAM count. All I have been able to (maybe) detect a pattern to is that it happens the next time I boot up after the PC had been running for a relatively long time (like this message?) <img src=/S/doze.gif border=0 alt=doze width=15 height=15> . Sometimes it requires 2 or even 3 reboots - but a shutdown and cold boot never does the trick - only a warm boot.

Thanks for the KB pointer. I can never seem to get the keywords right (are they even in English???) and tend to poke around lists of near-hits for hours before finding almost what I was looking for. I set the offending pc's msdos.sys to include Logo=0 and we havn't had any trouble since -- which does not necessarily imply a cure, but it does look hopeful.
