Can't Locate Powerpoint in Windows XP (Windows XP Home ed.)

Hi, I am new to this site, a computer geek wannabe but confess to not know much after having computers for 10 years. Recently purchased a new Gateway 500L2 in Nov. 2001. I have Windows XP Home Ed., Microsoft Works Suite 2001. I assumed Powerpoint was included in Works. However, when a friend tried to send me a link to a presentation with Powerpoint, I could not open the file. My computer kept trying to open the file with Word - which was a bunch of computer gobble-de-gook . I tried to find Powerpoint on my computer just this month (Feb. 2002) when the file would not open. I could not find Powerpoint, even when I used the "Find" feature and typed in Powerpoint...Answer: could not find file! I went to Microsoft's website (oh no!) and even found a chart that said Powerpoint should be included with XP Home Edition.
Note: My last computer with Windows 98 and Microsoftworks (or whatever it was called) had Powerpoint and opened presentations No Problem!
Could it be possible that Powerpoint was "forgotten" during installation of the programs on my new Gateway computer? Or is Powerpoint hiding in a somewhere? ! I am over this! Any info/help is appreciated! Robin

Robin,

It is possible powerpoint was forgotten during the install. I don't know what Office components come with what versions of Office but we'll assume you should have powerpoint since you say so.

First, doing a File find probably won't find it. Find is looking for the file name of the executable. In previous versions, it was something like ppt.exe. You might try doing a find on that or on "point" or on "power" although I think neither of these will result in anything useful.

Also, on my Start menu, I have an option for opening a New Office Document. When I click on that, I have lots of choices, including Presentations.

If your friend's ppt file is opening with word, that may because an Association is messed up. Windows looks at the last few letters after the last period in a name (known as the extension). It keeps a list of extensions and what programs should be used to open them when a user double-clicks the file or uses Open on the shortcut menu when right clicking the file.

Lastly, you can try looking in the folder where your Office programs are installed (somewhere under Programs) and see if you can find a name that looks like it should be powerpoint. Double click this to see if it opens, then try opening your friend's file when you're in the program.

HTH

If Microsoft holds to its previous practice of shipping PowerPoint XP with only certain Office package formats, or by itself, you will not have PowerPoint included with WinXPHome, or with the Works Suite.

There is a viewer available on the Microsoft WebSite for PowerPoint 2002 / XP. Give that a shot.

Hi Chris ! Looks like you were right and PowerPoint was not installed. I tried downloading the viewer you suggested and still no go . Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Fred ! I tried searching for Powerpoint using the methods you suggested and could not find it on my computer. Thanks, too for your help!

To Chris and Fred: I finally broke down and called Gateway Tech Support - couldn't believe I got right through! ! Seems Microsoft didn't include Powerpoint in my MS Works Suite 2001! So, if I want it - I have to buy it!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good place to buy MS Powerpoint (without taking out a second mortgage on my house or ? Any suggestions much appreciated.
This is a great website recommended by an astronomy friend of mine, thanks Woody ~ I've signed up for the newsletters, too! Robin

Hyperlinks added

Hi All, Just wanted to let you know that my friend who led me here to Woody's site and lounge found a version of a Powerpoint viewer that works fine with me! The viewer is an older one from Microsoft (even the download says for Windows 98, 2000, or ME and not for XP). The link for this viewer in case anyone needs it (you do not need Powerpoint installed just to use the viewer for viewing presentations) is this:

http://office.microsoft.com/download.../Ppview97.aspx

Gee, the old version works but the new ones do not. I noticed that Woody made some sort of comment that he loved Windows XP, but preferred the older versions of MS Office. Sounds like Woody is right! This download is by the way! Don't forget to print out the directions at the Microsoft site for using the viewer, you will need them unless you have a great memory , Hope my little problem and solution will help someone else, too. Robin
