'The VBA Project could not be signed.' (VBA 2000)

At present, I am unable to sign any macros - using sertcert.exe - on my office machine.

With Excel, Word and Outlook (SR-1), the error message reads: "There was a problem with the digital certificate. The VBA Project could not be signed. The signature will be discarded." Neither placing the certificate in the "Trusted" category nor resinstalling Office nor reinstalling the browser (IE6.0.2600) has brought any change.

The only other post that seems to indicate this problem suggested that it might be linked to Windows XP and/or that reinstalling IE5.5 (see above) could be a cure. The OS on this machine is Win2k (including the recent security rollup).

Possibly related: parts of the VBA Help (e.g. Methods not in the Contents List) tend to crash - both in Answer Wizard and in Index. NAV assures me that I have the latest update and there is not a virus in sight.

    Any ideas?

Re: 'The VBA Project could not be signed.' (VBA 2000)

I ran into odd problems like that with Help on Windows 2000 and finally tracked the problems down to a flakey installation of an unrelated product. It somehow hadn't quite finished installing. Once I uninstalled it my problem with Help went away. It took about 3 uninstalls and reinstalls of that product before I had both that app and my Office help behaving properly. Since then, every time I see something like this (I had it on two different machines), I look first for a Windows installer problem and start backing out programs, latest installed first. When stuff starts behaving again, I've found my culprit.

Thanks Charlotte! Fortunately, the list (of potential reinstalls) is relatively short. As for the self-cert problem, it appears that the original installation of self-cert.exe was the flaky item. <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>

It finally turned out that the issue with the Help file was a dicey copy of VBAXL9.CHM. The reinstall had simply left it hanging. Once it was deleted and then replaced, the crashes disappeared altogether.
