embedded TIF icons (Word XP)

We are unable to open embedded TIF images with Word XP. The images were inserted into the documents with Word 97 through the following process: Insert | Object | Create From File with Display As Icon selected. When you double click the icon in Word 97 the Imaging program opens the image. When you double click the icon from Word XP it displays an error

Sounds like your file associations for the Imaging software are not set right.

When you do the Insert|Object, does the Object Type list include the name of your imaging software? If not, reinstall it and see if that process doesn't correct the file associations and ole registrations.

Be sure to do the install while logged in with the Administrator account (if you're on NT or 2000 or XP)

If you display field codes (Alt+F9) are they coded to a particular application? If so, maybe you can find and replace that with whatever application Word 2002 is now using for TIF images? If not, and you see something generic like "Imaging.Document," search in the registry to see what you find under the related key (example attached). If you're not readily familiar with the registry, you will want to be very cautious!!

There is no field code behind these images. Other formats such as BMP's do show EMBED PBrush but none of the TIF images do. It's almost like there is a bug with how Word 97 is inserting this type of image.
