    StyleRef doesn't find hidden text (97, 2000)

We would like to have an abbreviated version of the section heading in the page heading, so I tried
{ StyleRef Abbrev * MERGEFORMAT }, but because the Abbrev style is hidden, nothing appears in the page heading, even when I apply a non-hidden style to the field codes in the page heading. :-(

It seems Word (both 97 and 2000) don't see the styles if the text in them is hidden.

    Any ideas?

You could redefine the style to have a 1 point font size, and the same color as the background. Would make it hard to see later (easy to accidentally delete), but it is a fallback if nothing else works...

    Thanks much

Thanks much. That did the trick. I unhid the Abbrev style and saw the results in the page headings, then changed colour and size as you suggested, result just right.

Keep in mind that displaying (but not printing) hidden text messes up your pagination in page (print) view.
