Is the a command line utility to compact PST files (97/98/etc)

I've searched and read through the posts which tell how the user can compact their PST file when logged on to Outlook xx - but can anyone point me at a command line utility which could be run overnight, say, to compact a PST file on the user's Home Directory? Obviously (?) the user would have to have shut down Outlook before s/he went home, so that the PST file was no longer in use...

No, the only utility is built in outlook. if you leave outlook open all night, it will compact during idle time - you shouldn't need ot leave it open all night, just all day. i'm not sure if this works for ol98, but it does for 2000, 2002.

Mary, thanks for that! Is there any way of determining just when the PST file is being compacted, so that maybe I could tell if this is happening on some olde Outlook 97 machines?

According to
OL97: Compacting Outlook PST and OST Files (Q176664)
OL97 will auto-compact.

To see if it is working, I would guess the easiest thing would be to note the file size in Explorer, then check again an hour later....

When OL is doing major compacting for me, the only way I can tell is that there's drive activity and I'm not doing anything else which would otherwise cause the drive activity. If you are running OL in Corporate or WorkGroup mode (Help, About, second line), you can go into Tools, Services, Personal Folders, Properties, Compact Now, and if it only takes a couple of seconds the file was compacted, if it takes longer it will be compacted when it's done. (Which doesn't answer your question directly, I know, and probably tells you what you already knew.)

Yes, we would be running in Corporate or Workgroup Mode!

But your solution naively assumes that we can get the users actually to do something useful!

I was intended to bypass this obstacle and do it all for them ...!

Sorry. I checked and there's no documented command line switch to compact OL97 or OL98.

Thanks to all for their messages. As far as I can see from a few users it seems that automatic compaction of PST files in Outlook 97 does not happen, at least chez nous; users have deleted messages with large attachments from Inbox and Sent Items, and then from Deleted Items, and come back the next day or two later, and found that they could do compaction "manually" and get a large PST file reduction.
