Taking a field from 1 table to another

I have an Access 2000 DB that I now have to add another table to. There are fields within another table that need to be moved to this new table.

My problems is there has already been data entered into this DB and I don't want to lose the data when I move this field to the new table.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

You probably need to change the target table to include the new fields, then run an update query to enter the data, then delete the fields from the source table. If this is too cryptic let me know and I will expand.

I guess I will need a bit more guidance on this. I tried to look up some information on the action query and it did not quite lead me to the solution I need. Thanks for taking the time on this.

I will assume that you have two tables in table1 there are fields A B and C, in table2 there are A D and E. You want to move field C to table2.

open table1 in design mode and note the exact details of field C

    close table1

Open table2 in design mode and make a field exactly the same

    close table2

create a query. Add table 2 to it.

Click field A and the new field C so they appear in the grid

on the toolbar is an icon with 2 overlapping squares. Click the arrow to the right and select update-query

in criteria under field A enter =[table1]![A]
in update to under field C enter [table1]![C]

Run this query and deal with any dialog boxes.

check table2 to see if it has done what you wanted.

open table1 in design mode and delete field C

    close both tables.

I think that should about do it.

Re: Taking a field from 1 table to another

Thanks for all your help on this one. I ended up doing an append query rather than strictly an update query. After trying the update I was confronted with parameter windows that I could not figure out what to put in. So, it forced my back to the book and after some (much) trial and error I did get it to append properly.

Again, thanks for your help, it did put me on the right track.
