    Win 98 to XP problem

I am running WIn98. I wanted to upgrade to XP. I purchased the Upgrade and started the install. The program stated that my upgrade functionality was turned off. and stopped. Any idea how to turn it back on?

What was the source of your W98?
I believe OEM versions may not be eligible for upgrades.

'Upgrade' does NOT mean you have to install one OS on top of the other.

    I would suggest :
    1. do not install XP on top of 98.
    2. the upgrade version of XP only needs you to prove you had a previous version of Windows (even my ancient Win 3.11 floppies worked). So all you need is your Win 98 CD, or other Win disks.
    3. Uninstall Win 98 - thus stalling the upgrade by-pass. Install XP. When asked, pop in the CD.
    4. It should also be possible (if you wanted to) to leave 98 where it is and install XP to a different disc partition. This ought to give you a dual-boot system.

The bugbear in all this is if you do not have a 98CD, or any previous version of Windows. As Leif suggests, you'd then be stuck.

So this means you have verified that any version of windows works and anyone who owns an older version that doesn't qualify for the upgrade pricing can buy it anyway, without fear that it won't install?

This following link will provide info on all available versions for upgrading.

Notwithstanding MerC's comment about his usage of Win 3.1.1 diskettes, the MS site seems to state otherwise.

    Cheers,
