    Using Windows XP Fax Services

I installed Windows XP (Home). TO make long distance calls I have to first dial a 7 digit code then the area code and phone number of the fax machine.

How is this accomplished in Fax Services. If I don't dial the 7 digit code first I do not get the discount rate from my phone carrier.

You need to modify the telephony settings to include the 7 digit code. This can be changed in the Control Panel, under Phone and Modem options. Create (or modify) a location to include the code. Commas become pauses in the dialing sequence, should you need to add a pause in the dialing sequence.

Re: Using Windows XP Fax Services

    Hi Mark
Thanks for your help again. I setup a new "Dialing Rule" (profile) under "To access an outside line for long distance calls, dial:", I put in my seven digit code. I then sent a fax using the Fax Wiizard. I couldn't hear the dial tones through my speaker so I turned on my phone.

I heard dial tones and then a message from the phone company telling me I needed to dial one or zero before a long distance call.

    Any other suggestions

You must also put "1" in the box "To access an outside line for long-distance calls, dial:"

Re: Using Windows XP Fax Services

I use a 7 digit access number for my long distance calls., when I phone normally I do not put a 1 in front of my 7-digit number.. It seems that Fax Sercvices in WIndows Xp Home does not seem to recognize my profile. It tries to phone directly the fax number I entered. It does not fax the 7-digit code first.

In the properties box for the dial-up connection, make sure that the checkbox for "Use dialing rules" is ticked.

    HI Mark
I finally tried your suggestion and it did not make a difference. I made sure the "Use dialing rules " box was checked.

I tried to put the 7-digt access code in the long distance and local boxes and got the same message from the phone number. I was trying to dial a long distance number. Fax Services seems to ignore the 7 digit access code.
