Internet Explorer 6 hesitation (6.0.2600.0000)

I have a high speed internet connection through a Comtrend ADSL modem and am running Windows 98(4.10.1998) on a two machine LAN through a SMC EtherEZ hub 3605T. My machine has an AuthenticAMD AMD-K6 3D Processor with 128 MB RAM.
I am running Ad/Subtract and use a Sygate Personal Firewall.
Since upgrading to Internet Explorer 6 from 5, I find that every once in a while ( too often) there is a long hesitation between connecting to the net and booting the browser. I have had my service provider change my modem and hub and check all the lines and they can find no problems. It was suggested that it might be a PC issue with Internet Explorer 6. Has anyone else noticed this problem and if so, what can I do to correct it?
Thanks in advance.

One long shot might be IE/Tools/Internet Options/General/Settings and select Never (...check for Newer Versions) . See if that speeds things up. Also do you have a big enough cache size for Temporary Internet Files? Try 50Mb if it seems too small.

Thanks Merc. I'll try both your suggestions though I do clear out the temp Int files frequently
I set the "check for newer version" to NEVER .
Now to try it for a while and see what we'll see.
Cheers.

Unfortunately, Merc., after trying the browser this evening, it still hesitates as it did before.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Internet Explorer 6 hesitation (6.0.2600.0000)

The hesitation could be up to 2 or three minutes and occasionally it won't reach the site at all. Then I just exit the browser and try again and it works fine.
Perhaps you should know that I have a dynamic IP address which changes every time I access the internet.
Regards.

Some further information about my problem:
When the hesitation occurs, the address bar remains blank and the status bar says "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and nothing else. It's as if the browser isn't getting the address.

Open a DOS window and type
ping 63.151.113.115

You should get a fast response.

Then try
ping wopr.com

If there is a delay, you may have a dns setup problem.

Re: Internet Explorer 6 hesitation (6.0.2600.0000)

The first time I ran ping 63.151 etc. the program just hung there after giving me the message it was pinging data:
So I ran it again and it was quite quick and displayed the response rates etc.
Then I ran the wopr.com and it was fine too.

I've reviewed my network settings and the DNS configuration has been disabled by the service provider. I assume this has something to do with the dynamic IP address stuff.

Re: Internet Explorer 6 hesitation (6.0.2600.0000)

Leif:
I called the help line for my ISP and discussed the problem again with a techie. He didn't know why my DNS settings had been disabled.
Anyway we re-enabled them and put in some numbers which were missing. Now, I'll wait and see what happens.
I don't know why they didn't ask me to check this earlier or why the service person disabled them. Anyway, thanks to your suggestion we may have solved the problem.
I'll get back to you later with the results.
Thanks to all who responded to my query.

Re: Internet Explorer 6 hesitation (6.0.2600.0000)

Here's an update on my browser hesitation problem. I went onto the net and searched for info on P.P.P.o.E.
I found a FAQ about browser hesitation just like mine.
here is the info I got.
I went to properties in Network Neighbourhood.
Then to the TCP/IP bound to my Ethernet card connected to my modem.
Chose IP address tab.
Added numbers given to me by my ISP techie.
Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
and clicked OK.
This might work I'm told.
He also told me to disconnect my DNS configuration .
This is getting to be really complicated.
However I can still connect to the net quickly most of the time so we'll see what this does. Sorry to clog your message board.
regards,
Jack

Sorry not to get back to you earlier - real work intervened!

I'm assuming you connect to your ADSL modem on your LAN:

Do you have the IP address of your ADSL box as your Default Gateway in your network TCP/IP setup?

My IP address is automatically chosen each time I access the web.
There is no gateway or IP address specified in my settings.

Yes, but before you access the web, you need to access your ADSL modem which may be where the delay is.

How is yours physically connected to your PC?
