Crashes But Stays In Memory (97)

I'm using Word 97 to write a statistics textbook. Normally, Word works fine and rarely crashes but the equation editor in Word is FLAKEY. When I'm working with equations, I cannot depend on Word running for an hour of solid work.

I'm convinced this is due to bugs in the equation editor. I have one machine at work and two at home and they all behave the exact same way. However, I'm not writing about the equation editor; although, if anyone has any tips on stabilizing it, I would not turn them down.

When Word crashes, if I restart Word and try to open the same document, it tells me the document is in use and asks if I want to open a copy of the document. For a long time, the only way I knew to get rid of this error message was to reboot. Then, I noticed that if I hit Control-Alt-Delete, Windows would tell me that there was a copy of Winword running. If I then use the dialog box to close that copy, I can open the chapter I was working on without any problem.

I'm not really asking a question but I figured I cannot be the only one this bug has bitten so I figured I would let people know about the problem and the work around I found.

    Hi Ronny:
When Word crashes, it leaves temp files lying around. That can cause your message. Search for ~*.doc,~*.wbk,*.tmp files using Windows Find feature & then delete them.

    Hope this helps.

This is not an issue of the temporary files that Word leaves when it crashes. I know how to find them, display them with the ATTRIB command, and then delete them. However, I cannot delete them after a crash. When I try, I get a SHARE violation.

The copy of Word that I am using is gone. Word does not show up on the bar beside the Start button. But, if it hit Control-Alt-Delete, Winword is listed in the running programs. If I close it from this dialog box, I can delete the temporary files.

Weird! I know. I think it is caused by the Equation Editor having to put Winword in the background to run in the foreground because this does not happen when Word crashes and I am not running the Equation Editor.

Your OS is Windows 98, right? Then the problem is the Winword.exe kernel that must be extracted with pliers.

Open the Task manager and end the Winword.exe task. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to see the Task Manager button.
