Word - Replace style with no style (word 97 sr2)

we want to remove styles from a document.

if we use Find style=heading1, no text, and Replace style=No style, no text
all the instances of Heading1 are Found but not replaced!

works fine if you want to replace Heading1 with another style.

surprisingly, found an workround at http://support.microsoft.com/directory/art...;EN-US;Q193538&

basically, save file as RTF, edit out the Style, and re-open as Word document.

but, surely, there's an easier way

Hi John,

In Word, every paragraph absolutely needs to have a paragraph style; else, you have a corrupted document.

The KB article explicitly states that you should only delete unused styles.

If you use the method described in the article, and your document still contains "Heading 1" paragraphs, these paragraphs change to "Normal", so you might just as well find/replace "Heading 1" with "Normal".

If you try to delete "Normal" from the RTF-file, too, the paragraphs will have no style, which means you end up with a corrupted document.

Why do you want to remove the styles? Or, more specifically, what do you want it to look like after you remove them?

we want to remove the Heading1 style to make the document behave better when we move it to another pc.
long-term, we're going to put together a proper template, but at the moment we have problems with multi-author documents ...
so we'd rather have documents with no styles, but with direct formatting.

thanks for the reminder klaus.

the headings are in tables; there are several tables which need to be combined (quickly). the styles are getting in the way, so we want to remove them.

Hi John:
Not a good way to go. If you use styles, you can always update them in the future. You can also modify a Heading 1 style to what you want. In fact, you can apply direct formatting to a heading 1 paragraph, click in the style box, press <enter> & a dialog box will pop up. Choose the option that updates the style to reflect your changes.

If you use direct formatting, you'll have trouble making changes in the future--not impossible to overcome, but more difficult.

yes, we realise that styles are generally a good thing.
this one time, though, i want to remove a particular style but not replace it with anything specific (eg normal).
if the styles are not there, it removes one reason for formatting to change.

No styles - bad boy!
Just kidding. I know that sometimes styles just can't cut it even though around here I'm known as the Style Police.
Try one of these options:
1. Select all - apply Normal Style. But your formatting will go away.
2. Select all - hit Ctrl+Q - this removes paragraph formatting
3. Select all - hit Ctrl+Space - this removes character formatting
4. Apply a template that does not exist on the new computer to the document. That way, when you open it on the new computer it won't default to the Normal Styles.

However, Styles should stay within the document. In theory, if you change styles in a document, they should stay the same if you open that document on another computer. However, I'm sure that there is an exception to every rule.

If interested, check out www.microsystems.com. They have several amazing tools to help make using Styles much easier and to make document almost corrupt-proof.

Phil,

I don't understand your answer to:

--we'd rather have documents with no styles, but with direct formatting.

I thought you can apply all the direct formatting you want, but it's still on top of a style no matter how plain looking it is.

I didn't think it was a question of ever not having styles. The issue really is whether you go style-crazy and create a style for each different document part, like in some of the MS Word templates. Or am I missing something after all these stylish years?

Phil,

Whew - I thought you were giving up on styles and adopting a direct-formatting strategy.

Edited by Phil Rabichow on 21-Feb-02 18:48.
Hi Fred:
Yes, you are right; there must be at least one style per paragraph. My response was really to the idea of using direct formatting over using styles. However, having styles for different parts of a document is desirable; having direct formatting isn't (usually). Having a style is much more consistent & can be changed & updated consistently. I'm not saying that direct formatting can't have it's uses, but it's not preferable to setting up templates (even though I'm too lazy to be consistent)
