Contacts back to Address Book, pleaase ! (Outlook 98)

    Hi all,
Sorry, I'm reposting the same message again, this problem is a pain.
I used to have more than 250 entries in my address book, which were also transformed more or less automatically into contacts by Outlook, probably as I edited them so as to have a clean and standardized person & company name. Then suddenly I lost the entire contents of the address book due to some MS bug.
By chance, I had made a backup so that I could recover these entries, but as contacts only. I would like to know IF and HOW I can make address book entries out of contact.
If anybody knows of a LDAP-based stuff (preferably Open Source) which could handle a corporate address book, PLEASE let me know!
    Thanks in advance,

The address book of which you speak, what application is normally used to maintain it? If not Outlook, can that application import data in a common format, such as CSV (comma-separated) or tab-separated?

If it's an Outlook .PAB (Personal Address Book), I think I had a macro once that could write to PABs, but with OL2000, I think it stopped working. Might be hard to dig up. What would be the reason to maintain both a complete Contacts folder and a complete .PAB?

    Jefferson,
I'm speaking of MS Outlook 98's address book. In fact, I use the French version and the item labelled "Contacts" in the vertical menu bar.
Basically, what I want to know is, can I take these entries in "Contacts" and put them back in Outlook's Address book. I managed to export the Contacts entries, but presently I see no way to reimport them as Outlook's Address book entries.
I'm also considering another approach: to put these existing entries in a non-Outlook based "Address Book" (LDAP directory), which would then be accessed from the e-mail clients (whether MS Outlook or any IMAP compatible stuff) of all users.
I agree there is NO reason to maintain both Contacts & Address book.
What you say about the difficulty to work with Outlook's proprietary formats, makes me believe the second solution is the best one in the long term, even if it represents quite more work.
Thanks in advance for your time.

editing entries in a PAB doesn't convert them to contacts - you needed to import then to contacts, which MS encouraged beginning with OL2000. The PAB won't be supported after another version or two.

If you were using the internet mode, you might of had them in the WAB, but the entries needed imported into outlook (outlook can populate the WAB but not use an existing WAB)

Did you actually lose the address book (WAB or PAB) or was it disconnected? Search for *.pab or *.wab and you might get your file back.

I'm really not sure what you were using - but I'm guessing you were using IMO mode (see help | about) and were sharing contacts with the WAB and sharing stopped. This happened either because you changed to corp mode or ended sharing.

I don't know if this is in your version. If not, sorry. But you might try a right click on your contacts folder. Select Properties. Look for a reference to Address Book and make sure it's enabled.

    Mary,
Thanks for your kind feed-back. I have no .PAB files, only 3 .WAB files, each a size between 175 & 177 Kb. Incidentally, one of them was generated when we changed our login IDs.
Your answer implies we might be better off by using contacts altogether. If there is a simple way to put the existing contacts (nearly 300) in shared mode, then things would be fine. If not, could you please elaborate on how to "get the file back" and how to check sharing mode?
We always used the Internet only mode (we don't have any MS Exchange here, but an IMAP mail server).

As I see it, apart from the numerous stand-alone (not integrated with e-mail client) contact management software, lots of which are in PHP and available as Open Source, which might work very well, the real solution would be LDAP - provided I find a proper graphical interface for daily management (and it might be a lot of work.)

    Thanks for the idea.
In Outlook 98, when I try this, I only have two tabs:
    - "General" enables me to input its name and description, and tells me it's located in my personal folders.
    - "Outlook Address Book" has an uneditable but enabled checkbox saying this folder is to be displayed as an e-mail addresses book - so that's all there is to it :-((

i never used IMO mode, so i'm going by what others have said - the steps might be a tab off as a result. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

try http://www.tomsterdam.com for help in opening wab's. i don't use them enough to know what to suggest, except once you open the files in the wab, you can export them as text files or vcards - or drang and drop the contacts to the desktop then drop them in outlook. (i don't think you can go from wab to contacts folder directly)

once they are in the contacts folder, you can enable sharing (i think you look on the address book's tools > options tab) and you'll have a view of the contacts, stored in outlook but visible from the wab interface.

it's also possible that sharing is enabled so you can't see the wab - if you disable it, the missing contacts might show up in the wab
