Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

    ok..Brian from New Jersey again...
I want to finish up this legal pleading. The law firm is happy, now I want to polish it.
They want page numbers but do not want a number on the first page.
So page 2 would start with the number 2 at the bottom.
    Here is what happens -
I insert a page number in the footer. When I select to make the first page different....the vertical double and single lines disappear on the pleading!!!! The second page and on is just fine! The first page loses the page number and the vertical lines! Ughhhhhhh <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>
I have Special Edition Using Office XP, read and tried all the typical head/footer, section break, page number tricks.......no soap!
Can anyone help me with exact info or suggest something? Be detailed and clear. I am a network guy, not an Office XP software pro... <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>
This group has been awesome in helping me and I thank everyone in advance for their help and advice....

Re: Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

Try a little field code code in the footer:

    { if {Page} >1 "{PAGE}" "" }

(That's just a representation of the toggled text of the field code stuff. You gotta enter the codes with Ctrl-F9, etc. )

Obviously, leave the "different first page" box unchecked.

Your vertical lines, line numbering, etc. are all a part of the header or footer when constructed with the pleading wizard.

Re: Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

    Hello Kevin,
I just love that pic of Macauley K !!!
Thanks for the help. What you suggested makes sense but I know nothing of field codes and I tried your formula but it did not work. Am I doing it right? I believe it is a nested field code so I should insert it each time with Ctrl-F9 right? So each of the brackets should not be typed, they should be doen with Ctrl-F9? Well I have done it multiple ways and no soap yet.
Any furhter advice or help? I have looked at a few books and will read more this weekend but so far nothing has really explained nested field codes and the options when dealing with {PAGE} itself.

    Thanks for your help.

Attached is a doc with the setup you want. Toggle field codes on.

    When you Ctrl-F9, remember:

IF statements need a space before and after the operator:

    IF PAGE > 1 NOT IF PAGE>1

Re: Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

    Thank you Kevin,
    You saved me!!!!
It worked, so I must have had one too many spaces. I definitely had these spaces but I think between the { and the PAGE I had 2 spaces instead of 1 but did not know it.
May I ask one last favor...what book or ref material did you use to learn field codes so well? I want to educate myself on this becasue I know it will fall into my lap again one day.

AGAIN...thank you thank you thank you!!! Discovering this website and dealing with the people in this forum has been invaluable for me!!!

    Hi Brian,

    You are welcome. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

Field codes! <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23> You might want to follow the links at Word Web Resources - Fields (addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm) especially Cindy Meister's series of articles.

Re: Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

    Hi Kevin,
Just had a quick question about the field codes/header issue you helped me with.
I did the field codes with the page numbers and as you know it worked beautifully.
Now, they want the header to work the same way! Instead of the company info on every page, they want it on the first page only ; however ; the same issue occurs...if I select first page different, the vertical pleadings lines disappear and everything gets messed up. Is there a way I can use field codes the same way for the header the way I did with the page numbers in the footer?
The header contains the law firm name, address, number, etc.

They want it in the header so that when typing a new letter, the secretaries cannot edit it on purpose or by accident.
Any help or assistance is appreciated. Your last tip was solid gold and a lifesaver/headache chaser!!!!

I see Charles has replied in the affirmative and I affirm his answer. If the Header text is more complex than just a single line of text, you'll need to press [Enter] after the text for each line:

    { if { Page } = 1 "Header Line 1
    Header Line 2
    Header Line 3" "" }

Re: Page numbers and legal pleadings HELP!!! (Word 2002)

    Thank you Chas and Kevin,
Again you both have provided solid advice and info. I am still polishing this stupid document (maybe I am the stupid one...lol). The field code works but it interferes with the caption graphic in the lower left. I am attaching a copy of the exact leading for your review. If I mess with the field code lines " { SHAPE *MERGEFORMAT } it alows the caption in the lower left to move down with every new line of text or ENTER button.
So...2 questions.any ideas on how to lock this all down and what software would you recommend for creating custom letters like this one? I will be done on this site in a week and want to leave them with something easier to use. They MUST use Word 2002. A program they use depends on it. I would like to find them a nice little add-on program that will allow these people to easily create the "once in a blue moon" oddball document they will need. This firm really has nothing more complicated than the doc attached here!! Everything else is simple and uncomplicated, straight forward letterhead.

Thanks again...Once I am done with my MCSA/ MCSE cert I think I will look into MOUS.
