page breaks, headings and other such fun (2K SR-1)

    Here's the scenario:
    - I create a word document and give several lines a Heading style
    - I insert page breaks before the lines with the heading style applied
    - The heading style is attached to the paragraph mark before the page break. If I reset this formatting, the heading style is lost from my line that needs it.
    - If I view the document map, it shoots me to the last paragraph of the previous page, where the heading style begins, rather than to the top of the page I wish to reach

All that being said, do I have to have an extraneous paragraph at the top of each page so I can set the heading style on the following paragraph and have it work correctly <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> or is there another way to get around this issue?

    Thanks!

I think what you are trying to do is set up a heading style that will always be at the top of a page; in which case you want to change the paragraph formatting of the style to include a page break before.
    1. Select one of your Heading paragraphs
    2. Use the menu commands: FORMAT, PARAGRAPH, and go to LINE/PAGE BREAKS
    3. Check the box that says PAGE BREAK BEFORE
    4. Click on the style box and reselect the style, and choose to redefine the style

Well that's cool, I didn't know you could do that. But actually sometimes I don't want the heading to be at the top of the page; it depends on the length of the text before and after it. Is there a way to have
    - normal text style
    - page break
    - heading style
    in Word?

    Hi Angela:

A couple of things. First, you could create two level one heading styles, one with page breaks before & one without.

Secondly, the example that you gave:
    normal
    page break
    heading

is what "page break before" is designed to do.

Finally, it sounds like you are placing the cursor in front of the heading paragraph & pressing Ctrl+Enter. Your heading paragraph is affected by the paragraph mark AFTER the heading, not before. If you place the cursor before the heading & create a page break, your page break is part of the subsequent heading paragraph. That's why the whole paragraph reverts to normal when you reset the foramtting of the page break.

I just tried it with Word 97 (don't have access to 2000 right now). The document map still goes to the proper heading.

    Hope this helps.
