    Add Icon for Specific Printer (Word 2002)

    Hi. I'm new to these boards and Word. I've been a WordPerfect user for decades, but have to convert to Word because of client demand.

    Can anyone tell me how to add an icon to a toolbar that, when clicked, will automatically send a document to a *specific* printer (versus the default printer) *and* print (I have 4 printers) instead of bringing up the print dialog box, changing printers, then clicking print? Just trying to save a few clicks and seconds.

    Thank you.

    As far as I know, no version of Word supports assigning a document to a printer (the way WordPerfect does).

    However, you can use a macro and a document property to emulate the same.

    Are you interested in a solution if it involves learning a bit of VBA?

    Hi Kevin,

    Sure, not to say I'll understand it all, but I'm up to learning ... or trying anyway. Just a note to clarify, I don't want to send a specific document to a specific printer, just add an icon to a toolbar so that I can send any document to that specific printer without going through the print dialog.

    Thanks.

    Hi
    You could try dragging the icon from the printers folder to the taskbar to create a copy

    then from explorer drag the document onto the printer icon.

    I think it should work

    Dont see that it saves any clicks with the doc already open though.

    Cheers

    Re: Add Icon for Specific Printer (Word 2002)

    Hi G,

    Actually, what I am looking for is a one-click print from within Word while I have the document open.

    Example: I open a document, make changes, save, and now want to print to a printer other than the default printer. Once the changes are saved, all I want to do to print the document to a specific printer is click an icon in the toolbar (thereby saving these steps: keyboard CTRL+P, click drop-down arrow, click on desired printer, click OK) ... like clicking the printer icon in Internet Explorer.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Kevin,

    Boy! that was quick. Thanks. Now to sound really silly ... what's the first step to do this? Can I just copy and paste what you've typed?

    Take a look HERE for a good tutorial on VBA to get you started. Take your time. There's lots to learn and it's time well spent.

    Thanks, Kevin! I may, eventually, be able to tolerate Word after all. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

    Re: Add Icon for Specific Printer (Word 2002)

    Here's the code that does the work. All you need now is to add a toolbar button that runs it.

    Sub PrintToSpecificPrinter
    Dim CurrentPrinter as string
    Dim PrinterName as string
    PrinterName = "HP Whatever LaserJet"
    CurrentPrinter = ActivePrinter
    If PrinterName <> "" Then
    With Dialogs(wdDialogFilePrintSetup)
    .Printer = PrinterName
    .DoNotSetAsSysDefault = True
    .Execute
    End With
    ActivePrinter = CurrentPrinter
    End If
    ActiveDocument.PrintOut
    end sub
