What is this symbol? (Word 2000 9.03821 SR-1)

Sometimes when I copy and paste text from a Web page or Outlook Express message into Word, I get a symbol at the end of each line that looks like a small arrow that goes down and to the left. I tried to do a replace operation to replace these things with paragraph marks, but they won't copy to the clipboard. Does anyone have a clue what these things are and how I can get rid of them other than manually?

That is a carriage return without a line feed.

Instead of doing a paste, do a Paste Special and select Unformatted Text when pasting text copied from a web page.

In Word, that is called a manual new line, and you can create one yourself using Shift-Enter. They are useful when you want to break a line but don't want to start a new paragraph (e.g., in a heading). The reason web pages sometimes contain these characters is that Word treats the code as a manual new line and a

    code as a paragraph.

To replace the manual new lines in Word, expand the Find dialog using the More button and it's on the special characters list. The code is ^l (caret plus lower case L).
