I received this tip in an email from Serdar Yegulalp's Win2K Power User's Newsletter (visit the site at http://www.win2kpowerusers.com/. Immensely useful since I've seen this problem noted here a few times with XP Home:

Previously, when talking about VPN/WAN problems, I noted that XP Home doesn't like to be joined to a domain. Happily, there is a way to get around this, as sent to me by reader Mike W.:

"Download & install PowerToys for XP. Then in the "Powertoys for Windows XP" group choose TweakUI. Under the logon tab you can specify a domain. We use the Nortel VPN client for work & we were told the client is not compatible with XP yet."

Is it that simple? Apparently it is. Yet another reason to get your hands on PowerToys for XP if you haven't already. As of this writing, though, it's not available on the Microsoft site -- it's been taken in for retooling -- but you can still get it from other places that may have mirrored it.
