You either have a virus or, more likely, badly coded global templates or add-ins.

Howard, thanks. the PC is nearly new and I havent received anything remotely suspect in email.i did run norton antivirus to be certain.. and the WOrd reinstall was naked... but the problem persists. perhaps there is something that continues to lurk in the registry even after word is deleted.
    again, many thanks

What global templates do you have installed? Anything listed in the Tools, Templates and Add-ins... dialog?

I wonder whether your antivirus software is making some security changes every time you start Word? Is there an option in Norton to turn off Office integration and see if that makes any difference?

Running auntie virus software does not mean that there is no virus.

In your case, tho, I suspect a badly behaving 3rd party template/add-in.

As mentioned in several other messages in this forum, the culprit can be a poorly written add-in. In particular, the Microsoft Word in Works Suite 2000 Add-In.

I just determined for a friend today that this add-in has been saving her normal.dot every time she exited Word for the last nine months. Her normal.dot has ballooned from 35K to 900K in size!
