Cut and Paste Not Working (Version 2000)

The Microsoft Word "cut and paste" feature has stopped working on a number of computers in our school system. We reinstall Word and it starts working again but after about 8 hours or so it stops working again. It seems that the problem is growing with more and more people reporting this problem. Does anyone know if this is caused by a virus or what can be done to fix the problem so that it stays fixed.

This is usually because you have run out of virtual memory on your PC. Restart the problem PC. This will reset everything back to the default.

    Most probable cause:

You might have copied more than 12 items The Office Clipboard can hold up to 12 items. If you try to copy a thirteenth item when you're using a Microsoft Office program, a message asks if you want to discard the first item on the Office Clipboard and add the new item to the end of the clipboard. If you click OK, the next time you copy an item from any program, the Office Clipboard will automatically discard the first item and add the new item. If you click Cancel, any new items you copy won't be added to the Office Clipboard. You won't see the message again until you clear and then refill the Office Clipboard.

Note that the collected items remain on the Office Clipboard until you close all Office programs running on your computer.

You might have copied large items In this case, the Office Clipboard might hold fewer than 12 items. To begin copying items again, delete specific items from the Office Clipboard, or click Clear Clipboard on the Clipboard toolbar.

If it is not the case, check memory usage. Try to increase memory allocation.

It does not appear to be a memory issue because once it stops working, you can restart the computer with no program other than Word running and the copy command is just not available from the menu, using the keystroke shortcut, or from the toolbar icon for even the smallest amount of text.

    Judy,

It could possibly be caused by a virus (have you scanned these PCs with an up-to-date virus scanner - and if not, why not?<g>).

But you also may consider whether this is just malicious mischief on the part of one (or more) of the students! - it's very easy to remove menus and key commands via customize.

I agree with another individual that posted a message, it could possibly be a virus on the computer that has sprung to the network. One way to verify this is to go to your Menu bar and click on Tools/Macros and see if your macros have been disabled.

It more than likely has affected your Normal.dot. My suggestion is to run a virus scan to check for the virus if there is on out there and if there is not then I would reinstall the Normal.dot template. I have run across these templates getting corrupted and causing all kinds of problems. The only way to correct this was to reinstall the Normal.dot. Make sure you do not get a copy of one from the machines at your school because they may all contain the virus or corrupted information.
