New IE Patches Released!! (5.x, 6.x)

Apparently Microsoft really is doing a security roundup. Just to make sure folks in these parts can find it if necessary, here are the two latest releases that repair "critical flaws" in Internet Explorer (thanks to Paul Thurrott):

<UL><LI>IE 6.0 vulnerability (XMLHTTP Control Can Allow Access to Local Files)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...in/ms02-008.asp<LI>IE VBScript vulnerability (Incorrect VBScript Handling in IE can Allow Web Pages to Read Local Files)
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...in/ms02-009.asp[/list]

It's Murphy's law: release a roll-up package and immediately discover more bugs.

As an aside, I tried to save the download pages for these patches onto the local intranet using Save As... Complete page. Several of the links did not properly convert, in some cases because they were in included JScript files, and in others because, well, I don't know. Maybe the ACTION property of a FORM tag never is converted to the full URL needed to submit a form you save locally.

Hopefully it works better in IE 6.

Yes, I'd agree with that one. I'll never forget Service Pack 2 for Windows NT....holy smokes.

I did manage to install both of the IE patches without any apparent problems, but then that's only on one machine and I'll be doing the others one at a time....and keeping an <img src=/S/eyeout.gif border=0 alt=eyeout width=15 height=15> for weirdness to crop up.

I've had trouble saving complete web pages that use complex scripting, and I believe it has a lot to do with the site structure. Doubtless Microsoft has scripts being called from several different locations on the web server. For patches I prefer to download them for later burn to a CD.
