    Using docmd.transfertext over multiple disks (Access 2000)

    I have an application that has a system backup function to allow user to save their data to a diskette as a comma delimited text file. The application has 12 tables and uses a variation of the following code for each table:

    Me.lblStatusMessage.Caption = "Backing up order history table."
    Me.Repaint
    DoCmd.TransferText TransferType:=acExportDelim, _
    SpecificationName:="tblOrderHistory Export Specification", _
    TableName:="tblOrderHistory", _
    FileName:="a:tblOrderHistory.txt", _
    HasFieldNames:=True

    The problem is that several of the tables have become so large that they no longer will fit on a standard floppy, generating a disk full error message. Is there any way for the transfertext method to allow a file to be continued over multiple disks. If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to another method of performing a system backup?

    Thanks,

    Vernon

    I'm sorry that I don't have any ideas that will work from within Access, but if you use a zipping application (such as Winzip), you can call the zipping command (including spanning multiple discs) using a command line function.

    Winzip has a free add-on that enables command-line calls. You could use the Shell() function from within Access to zip the file to the floppy - including the span multiple discs command.

    TransferText is a "dumb" command. It either succeeds or fails. You would need to use another program to create a zipped file from your text file and then use FileCopy to copy that file to a diskette. If you want to span floppies, you have to do that from directly within a program like WinZip. You can't create a file and then copy it in parts to multiple floppies.
