Newbies - Internet

Howdy,

Perhaps there is room here for a 'best of' forum, or 'training' or 'newbies.' The idea is that if I want to put my Grandpa online, (who is vaugely aware of computers or the internet) I can provide a resource which would consistantly get updated with more newbie requests, and answered by this community of seasoned web-users.

I've tried finding such forums, but am unable to do so, most places only offer breif definitions of common terminology, but don't really offer a forum for getting from point A to point B.

Drk.

I am sure that if Grandpa Comes askes a question we will help him out. If he posts the question on the wrong board we will guide him in the right direction.
I agree that most of the forums that are out here on the web, are not for the beginner. Some start out to be, but the crowd just out grows the startup and become advance users. Remember we ALL started there at one time or another.

The goal is to make the learning process as simplified as possible. Older people in general don't have the patience to learn something new, a tool such as a generalized 'basic' forum could be a great asset and tool, and for some of us, with friends who are internet challenged, we can say, "Hey, you have no clue? Go here!"

Dave and I and a good few others around here, as certified card-carrying "Old Fogies" will certainly drink to those sentiments. "Keep all those boring old farts out from under our feet" is what I always say!!

Just exactly how young are you, my child?

I am a member of the KEGS here in the greater Seattle area. We mantain a computing training center at one of the local Sr. Centers. Those old ones (there not much older than I am) sure do have a lot of fun when they do learn about the net. As for some have asked 'Why didn't my Grandson tell about this or that'? Early 20's...

Okay.. bad example.. you know that people of all ages can benefit from a good forum which presents the basics, a place where they can post thier question without being called a lamer, and most importantly, a place where they will be helped. (There virtually aren't any such places out there...) Just an [idea]...

Send him (Grandpa) to us, and let us try.

Hehe. We never get any email from *my* mother. She has her hand glued to the mouse and refuses to *touch* the keyboard.

Considering this is quite a specialised board, I can't imagine what such neophytes would be doing here in the first place.

Hi DrkR.,

You might have a look at some of the Microsoft public newsgroups - I seem to recall there are "Beginner" sections for some of the topics.

Also, subscribe to Woody's Office for Mere Mortals newsletter - it's not exactly for absolute beginners, though.

Re: Newbies - Internet

Ahh well.. someday i'll have to set something up.. there really isn't anything decent out there to guide people new to the internet in any direction what-so-ever. My first experiences were similiar to a rat in a giant maze, i didn't know where to go, or what to do. As to what the neophytes would be doing here, that all goes back to marketing, if you 'lead' people through the cloud of the internet, when those people become proficient to any degree, they'll continue to come back, and as a majority of thier peers aren't internet-minded either, they'll tell thier friends.. so on so forth.. soon you're spreading wealth of knowledge to the masses on every level. Just an idea folks!!

Talk about problems running Windows software on your machine...let alone the animated GIFs...
