W2K SP2 Pro. CD ROM Drive Letter

We are running W2K SP2 Pro on a new laptop. Every time we change the CD ROM Drive Letter from D to R at some point (and this is the weird bit), with no apparent set pattern you will log backin and the CD Rom Drive Letter has reverted back to D.

    Two questions.

    1. Does anyone know why this is happening?
    2. How can I permanently set the drive letter to R?

    All help much appreciated.

    Regards
    John

    Hello John,

How are you assigning the drive letter to the CD-R drive? You can assign multiple letters in 2000, so if you have more than one that may explain why. You need to change the drive letter in the Disk Management section of the Computer Management console.

    Hi Mark,

I am using the diskmgmt utility to assign a new drive letter and I only have one internal CD drive.

John, since you're using the management console to perform the operation, the only thing I can suggest is to make sure there are no "alternate" letter assignments. Make sure you change this will full administrative access; you may also need to remove any additional user profiles for it to propagate to other user accounts correctly. Outside of that, if the settings don't hold, I'd suspect that it's something quirky about Windows - and there's no shortage of that!

    Many thanks,

I will make sure that there are no additional user profiles.
